The foreign press discourse about Kazakhstan

This theme is topical in the nowadays of integration into the world’s economics and complicity.

Today’s Kazakhstan goes ahead and it is very important for us to know the opinion of foreign countries about Kazakhstan. In the process of working we used the materials of the following sources:  American magazine “Newsweek”, newspaper “The times of central Asia”, “ Financial Times ”, internet sources “News”, “Interfax”. Having looked through the information we came to the conclusion that our country is not in the centre of foreign press’ discussion about Central Asia.

Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Iraq and Iran’ for example, are more often observed. Of course it is tied with the unhealthy political and social situation there and we do not long for such fame.

Speaking about Kazakhstan it is possibly to mention that our country has proved itself to be stable and reliable state. Though it has its reasons for “gossips ”.

Topics of Kazakhstan life which are observed in the foreign press are different.

It becomes obvious if we read the headings. They are: “ Kazakhstan to transport  700,000-800,000 tons of grain in September ”, “ Kazpolymetal to start exploring Tarutin copper field in 2008 ”, “ Struggle between  Kazakh metal barons turns hot”, “ Nazarbayev honors Kazakh Olympic winners”, “ President opens new secondary school in Astana ”, “ Participation in Troika ”, “ Kazakhstan Focuses on OSCE Chairmanship 2010 ”. A lot of articles are devoted to relations between Kazakhstan and China, the problems of Aral Sea, Kazakhstan’s entry into the World’s Trade Organization ( WTO). They are political, financial, social themes.

The heading usually reflects the main idea of the article or contains so-called

“catchwords ” to attract reader’s attention. For example, the article written by Charles Van Der Leeuw in magazine “Newsweek” under the heading “Struggle between Kazakh metal barons turns hot”. This expression can be translated “çàïàõëî æàðåíûì ” ( a literally translation of the sentence is: “Â áîðüáå êàçàõñòàíñêèõ áàðîíîâ ìåòàëëà çàïàõëî æàðåíûì” ).

The language of press like any other writing material has its own features which cause problems in translation. Such features form a style of writing work. Style of press has another reason for trouble as well. It is its functions. Besides an obvious informative function, style of press has the function of persuasion and agitation. That is why there are a lot of emotional words are used there including phraseological units. Neologies, international and foreign words are also frequent.

Let’s analyze the article written by Charles Van Der Leeuw under the heading

“Struggle between Kazakh metal barons turns hot ” ( dated September 4, 2008 ).

In general it can be said that it is about two large shareholders Kazakhmys and Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation (ENRC) who struggle for the power and a leading place in the world’s copper industry. The article regards foreign partners’ point of view at the situation and the position of our government headed by president.

The article regards political, financial, economic questions all together. It is remarkable from the stylistic point of view because it uses phraseological units-

turns hot ”, expressions  one seat on the boards”, “to be a strong advocate for a merger”,” the chairman of the board” , “a group of arm-twisting oligarchs”, foreign words – Russian “ troika ”, which is replaced into American press by means of transliteration. Abbreviated which are also often used in style of press are present in the article as well –“ENRC”.

It is interesting to mention that the language of politics ( British , American, German, Russian ) often applies to the theme of  theatre ”. Politicians are called

actors”, the head of government – “ is playing a leading part / a main character”,

A sphere of political activity is called “arena ”, dishonest actions in politics are called “ backstage games ”. In the given articles words  arena” , “ players ”,” troika”,” pioneer”,” four T’s ” are used.

“Kazakhstan’s  presidency might help overcome stagnation in OSCE “. This statement was made by OSCE Secretary General Marc Perrin de Brichambaut, as he answered the questions of the Belarusian State University students on 15 March.

Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister, Marat Tazhin said that “Kazakhstan is a pioneer among all ex-Soviet states and our chairmanship is a unique precedent. The nation will chair the Organization in a tough period. The global economic crisis and growing tensions in the international arena energy and food deficits, the problems of non-proliferation these challenges demand very balanced policies”.

“On 1 January 2009, the Republic of Kazakhstan formally joined the Troika of Chairmen of the OSCE ”, was written in the article about participation.

“The 2010 Chairmanship would be guided by trust, tradition, transparency and tolerance – four T’s, he said”, was written in the article “Chairmanship 2010”.

Not all themes that are met in the foreign press about Kazakhstan are so serious. For example, British “Financial Times” has written the gossip about the intention of

“ Kazkom ” together with Master Card to offer their clients new pay cards decorated with diamonds and gold.

So you see that now, when Mass Media exist it is impossible to hide anything from the “eye of public”.
