Identification and development of gifted students in modern schools
The
transition to an innovative economy contributes the development of society,
based on intelligent, innovative principles. In today's global economy the center of the gravity moves competition
into innovation area. Innovations play a key and integral role.
Problems
in education slow the implementation of the Russian innovative development
strategy. While nowadays exactly human resource capacity, their capabilities
and knowledge become a priority in the development of the society in today's
innovation economy. Creativity and intellectual potential of people are the
basis of socio-economic formation and development of any society. They multiply
the effectiveness of social reforms, they are the decisive factors. There is a
great competition for the qualified human resources between modern enterprises
and organizations. Inattention to the development of gifted students in
secondary and higher education for the state turns into essential material,
psychological, and political losses.
Over
the last years the interest in the problems of gifted students development has
increased significantly. Gifted students problem in modern Russia have entered
a period of an active formation, there was a qualitative change in its
understanding. Mainly there have been changes in legislation: modernization and
innovation education were hailed as the only way that is able to bring modern
Russia in the developed countries. However, the practical aspects of the
implementation of these issues have remained unchanged.
Based
on the Lyceum experience there are the following pedagogical conditions sx
successful development of education:
- involve students in research and intersubject activity;
- use in the learning process innovative pedagogical approaches, various
forms and methods of interaction between all participants in the educational
process;
- successful mastering and core competencies;
- effective children`s involvement in extracurricular activities
(Olympiads, training in physics and mathematics at University schools, workshops,
scientific and practical conference subject etc.);
- creation and application of the diagnostic, methodological and practical
methods for efficient selection and development of students in specialized
classes;
- implementation competent psychological and pedagogical support of
students education.
Lyceum
¹ 1 named after academician B.N. Petrov, as a school of high status, commit to
constant improving of the educational process. Teachers of the department of
mathematics, physics and informatics are successfully implementing educational
programs of school education: almost all graduates enter the universities,
including many prestigious universities in Moscow and St. Petersburg, some of
them are studying abroad. Nowadays, when the whole system of education in
Russia is in the process of modernization and in accordance with the national
educational initiative "Our New School" at the Lyceum have been
allocating special direction in the work - Development of the system to support
gifted children. For almost 50 years experience in the Lyceum is being created
an effective system of such work with gifted children. During the study of
mathematics, physics and computer science, with a proper choice of educational
technologies, it is possible to successfully develop the student talent. After
all, in the teaching of these disciplines, it is possible to use different
types of learning and methods of extracurricular activities: working with core
training and more specialized literature, the implementation and execution of
the experimental observations, as well as the problems solving. Also we should
emphasize on such methods of extracurricular activities as: hobby groups,
contests, Olympiads and competitions organized outside the Lyceum. Development
of the gifted person necessarily requires nurturing and development of an
innovative approach to thinking, including math and science.
In
modern pedagogical science the concept of giftedness is a dynamic phenomenon.
Therefore, the "center of gravity" in the science searches about
development of the gifted students moved towards the development of personality
of each student and to increase in the quality of secondary education and the
formation of social and educational conditions for realizing the potential of
each student.
It
is known that gifted students have a number of special psychological
characteristics. Such as accelerated mental development, cognitive unsatisfying
need a high degree of mental activity, a creative approach to overcoming the
problems, the desire to self- development, special emotional sensitivity and
independence. These features certainly need to consider working with gifted
students.
Over
many years of experience in the department of mathematics, physics and
informatics have formed an effective and proven system of work with gifted
students.
First
– the work to identify gifted and motivated children certainly begins in the
curricular lessons. Teachers of the department on their classes not only give
the basic knowledge of the subjects, but also create conditions for the
identification and implementation of gifted students. The main aspect of this
work - developed individual tasks. Individual, unconventional and creative
tasks or tasks of high complexity contribute to the development of
unconventional thinking, persistence and development of personal, individual
qualities of every child.
Second
– the work on the selection and education gifted students should continue on
elective courses. On II and III levels of school education children take
elective courses on mathematics, physics and computer science. Competent
organization of these courses is an important part of the selection and
development of gifted students and contributes to solving the following
pedagogical objectives:
- encourage the development of students' personal qualities, which
are necessary for self-discovery,
self-expression and self-improvement:
- allows students to try to force themselves and their in-depth study of
the subject ;
- develops children's creativity, reflexive skills, the adequacy of
self-perception;
- creates social groups of students with common subject interests;
- creates opportunities to make non-standard forms of learning, taking
into account the individual 's personal students ability.
By
early September of each academic year teachers gather a small group of students
wishing to study academic subjects in addition. They attend elective courses,
and subject clubs. As a result, elective courses and subject groups engaged
students who are not only involved in a subject, but who have a desire to make
an effort, reach and learn more in this school subject .
Third
– the work on the definition and disclosure of gifted students continuing
through competitions in school, participation in competitions at various
levels. Often when the student is gifted in a particular subject area, with the
help of personal teacher`s touch and additional subject knowledge? he can
achieve high results and prizes in various competitions , Olympiads, Science
Days.
Fourth
– to create a small groups of gifted students on elective courses, workshops,
creative and research laboratories , creative studios , project activities. In
school when teachers carrying out the work with gifted students special
individual attention is certainly make the most efficient ability to uncover
seniors. On the scientific conferences "Step into Science", which is
annually held in lyceum, our department usually present students work in three
sections: "Mathematics", "Physics", "Computer Science
and ICT".
To
control and better manage the development of gifted students, lyceum teachers
try to carry out a purposeful activities:
- systematic work on the creation of lyceum student`s database exhibiting
specific educational, scientific and artistic achievements ;
- maintain contacts with graduates of the Lyceum, monitoring their further
development of skills;
- familiarity with effective methods of psycho-pedagogical support and
identify giftedness.
Implementation
of this system work with gifted children allowed Lyceum achieve these targets
successfully. Number of winners and runners intellectual competitions and
conferences over the last three years has increased almost three times.
Annually expands the range of intellectual competitions, which involve our
children .
It
should be noted that the work carried out has improved the level of motivation
to study subjects, as well as more active participation in various contests and
competitions, and as a consequence significantly increased the effectiveness of
the Lyceum participation in various activities at different levels. These
results contribute to the personal growth of our students confirm the high
level of intellectual and creative development of students, provide a high
percentage of the quality of education - 73 % in 2012-2013 and 100% receipt of
graduates in prestigious universities of the country.
