Job insecurity as a disease of 21st century

Introduction. Some of the people you know may have only had a few jobs – or even one job – in their lives. If so, they are likely to be older than 50, having grown up at a time where company provided a steady career and a comfortable pension.

They probably spent 20 or 30 years with the same company never having a reason to fear layoffs.

These days, however, everything is much different. As a result of globalization ‘job security’ can seem like a thing of the past. [1]

Resourses and methods. Greenhald and Rosenblatt provided theoretical articles about job insecurity. Also there were used such methods like comparison, analysis, generalization and systematic method

Results. When people are not concerned in tomorrow they start to flip out. They pile on more work that they can handle. Job insecurity encourages people to work harder.

Among the first to place job insecurity in a larger theoretical context was Greenhalgh and Rosenblatt. They defined job insecurity as a ‘perceived powerlessness to maintain desired continuity in a threatened job situation’. [2]

The effects of job insecurity:

-         health and well being ( correlation between job insecurity and ‘poor general health’);

-         family relationship ( the more insecure people feel at work the more likely they are to experience tension at home);

-         organizational efficiency ( the relationship between the job insecurity and self-reported motivation level is a negative rather than a positive one). [3]

The truth is that an employee can do a lot to reduce the fear and feeling of job insecurity. It does get rather tough and unconvincing when a person feels insecure all through a major part of his work career. Such a person will more often than not have complaints about other colleagues, they seem to get more pay than him, they seem to have the easier work to do etc. [4]

Job security comes from making sure that your daily performance is good enough any company would be crazy to let you go. Even when entire company shuts down a top performer will be the very first to be referred to a different company. A good reputation of hard work and integrity will spread faster than wildfire in the business community. [5]

Conclusion Nevertheless reality changes extremely quickly, if you work hard and do your best to show high performance at your job, you will be more confident in your future even in the worst times for business community.
