THE ROLE OF SELF-ESTEEM
IN ADOPTING PROCESS OF STUDENTS
TO STUDY
Self-esteem is the value which significance the
individual gives himself
as a whole and as certain aspects of
its identity, activity and
behavior. Self-esteem stands as a
relatively stable structural
formation, as a component of
self-knowledge and self-evaluation
process. The basis of the self-esteem creates a system of the personal qualities of the individual, adopted system of values.
Self-esteem is formed with the active participation of the person
and reflects the originality of his inner world
The functions of self-esteem and self-respect in the mental life of the individual consist in the fact that they are the internal
conditions of the regulation of behavior
and activity. By
including the self-esteem in the structure of motivation
of activity the personality always correlate his
capabilities, mental resources with
the objectives and means of action.
According to the usual integral human perception of the unity of the
senses, mind and will the expression of self-esteem might be presented by emotional,
cognitive and volitional
forms.
According to G. V. Ostapenko the development of self-esteem occures in two stages:
in the first – person, assessing himself
is satisfied by the evaluation of
his actions and deeds; the second
– in the area of self-esteem internal states and moral qualities of personality are recorded [2, p. 131]. Formation of the second phase – a higher level of
self-esteem – begins in
adolescence and continues throughout
life as how the accumulation of social
experience proceeds, subsequent mental development, and the development
of consciousness.
The process of evaluation can go different ways depending on many factors.
A person can simply borrow the opinion of others about himself, and can
critically think about the nature of his behavior and deduce their own opinion.
One person constantly analyzes his previous experiences, draws conclusions,
trying not to do something or believes himself infallible, or simply does not
know how to do something. For somebody the important foundation of self-esteem
is only his own desires that are not supported by previous cases, experience or
abilities. These people never agree with criticisms in their address, or
negative assessment.
The analysis
of educational
and psychological literature on
the formation of self-esteem, allows to establish certain quality
levels and types of self-esteem.
Self-esteem is one of the most important factors of success, because
knowledge of the opportunities encourages people to strive for their use. All this may be largely stipulated by self-esteem, the development of such qualities as
validity, accuracy and stability.
Two important factors enforce the self-esteem:
communication with associates and
own human activities. Of particular importance for treatment and to create content of self-esteem is personal
destiny of man. Insufficient
development of knowledge about oneself, its inaccuracy and incompleteness
make young person
vulnerable to negative external assessments, he
takes them for granted, which
sometimes leads to the development of negative
attitudes towards himself, blocking
his activity [1, p. 55].
Thus, the self-esteem of the person and his abilities affects the formation of moral conduct and right attitude of students to the environment. Knowing human self-esteem
is very important to establish relations with him, for
normal communication in which person as social
being is inevitably involved.
