Representation of Migration in the
Context of 2015-2016 Publications
Annotation: Mass
media often interprets process of migration, migrants and interethnic
relations. In turn, the media is a key means of creating a public opinion about
critical model of migration at the national population. The analysis of
publications in the period of 2015 and beginning 2016 helps to reveal a
subsequent negative tendency in acceptance of migrants on different
territories.

Mass
media and Internet resources disclose the problem of migration, migrants, and
cross-cultural relations. It is important to note that sharp increase the
amount of such kind of materials is connected with a current political
situation in countries.
In
the aspect of migration media resources play a special role. Firstly, when
potential migrants watch the news or read newspapers, they make a decision
where they would like to live. Secondly, mass media has become a leading
instrument for communication between migrants and indigenous population.
Europe
faces an inflow of migrants from developing countries, but in recent months, it
has taken a frightening and treacherous character. The reason of this is the
aggravation of the situation in a number of Middle Eastern Countries. Mass
media creates a negative model of migration in the eye of the public. It is
vital to note that the Russian articles depict migration as something
uncontrolled and criminal, through threatening metaphorical models, which have
a negative impact.
It
is common knowledge that people use different metaphors in their speech. Active
use of such expressions is a consequence of changes in view on the migration
flow and unstable situation in the country. The use of different words and
expressions is a desire to emphasize the duration of the migration process and
dissatisfaction of the Russian society.

2015 was a difficult and unsuccessful year for Germany. Migrants continue
arriving to Germany from Syria and North Africa. Germany wishes to toughen the
rules for asylum migrants because of the increasing flow of migrants. The
central newspaper of the publishing house “AIF”
(“Argumenty i Fakty”) [№2 13/01/2016] offered the article: “Europe swarms in panties. Why did the
migrants attack women in Germany?”. This article describes the events that
happened on New Year in Germany. “The
centre of Cologne, the groups of young people of Arabic and North-African appearance surrounded the women. They
were stripped off their clothes, assaulted and robbed. The police received more
than five hundred statement about the attack. The similar outrage occurred in
other German cities” [1].
The
migrants attacked the women. Migrants characterize themselves as licentious
people, who should not be isolated from society. People can notice that
migrants want respect from others, even after criminal acts.

The program “Novosti” [2] describes a
terrorist attack in Turkey which happened January 12, 2016. “The major terrorist attack has happened in
Turkey today”. The suicide-bomber arrived from Syria as a migrant, demanding
housing, due to unstable situation in the country. “Some of the neighborhoods
are still surrounded in Istanbul. This attack is not the only one, for that
reason they look for possible accomplices of the suicide-bomber. The
authorities are sure about the traces of the attack from Syria, from the
territory controlled by Islamic State. The police does not exclude that there
can be one more terrorist in Istanbul” [3].

Another publication by “AIF” (“Argumenty
i Fakty”) [47 18/11/2015] “The silent
town. What happened in the street of Paris after the terrorist attack?”. There
was a terrorist attack 13 November 2015 in Paris. There were attacks committed
on the night of November 14 at six locations. Two hundred people were
hospitalized with injuries and one hundred fifty people died. “On 13 November, the capital of France was
shaken by a series of attack: more than one hundred thirty people died and
hundred of people were injured. Why did people organize this action?” [4].

The program “Novosti” describes the
terroristic attack which happened October 10, 2015. “The Turkish capital was shaken by several powerful explosions. It
had happened before the beginning of a large anti-war meeting. According to the
last information, eighty-six people died, one hundred ninety people were
injured. They convened an emergency meeting of the State Security Council of
the country in Ankara. Turkey declared three days of mourning” [5].
In
addition, we should mention the background migrant. Why do the migrants prefer
to live in Europe? The answer is very simple. The standard of living in Europe
is one of the highest in the world. High welfare, the low level of hostility,
are the conditions in which migrants would like to live. Besides, as the
politicians say, if you do not welcome migrants, you will condemn them to
death, it is like a humanitarian catastrophe.
The
period of 2015 and the beginning of 2016 is characterized by migration.
Analyzing the events which occurred in this period, we can say that migratory
crisis will not decline in Europe and moreover will strengthen significantly.
The difficult situation with migrants and the inability to make the peace can
lead to disintegration of the European Union. We can safely assume that a
number of terrorist acts and victims will grow with a huge pace.
Summing
it up, mass media considers migration and migrants as a threat for indigenous
people and society. It is difficult to find a sympathizing article about life
and condition of migrants. Some of migrants think that they are permitted to do
what they want: to rob, destroy rape and arrange the acts of terrorism. In
their turn, ingenious people use a variety of metaphors, when they treat
migrants, for example: illegal aliens, the mass, murders, animals.
