On developing communicative skills of modern agricultural university graduates

Communication is one of the most important parts of our lives. Once Antoine de Saint-Exupery said: “The greatest luxury is the luxury of human communication”. It goes without saying mastering communication skills is necessary for every person regardless of activities they are engaged in. It’s more essential for business people: entrepreneurs, economists, managers, people involved in the sphere of management. Unfortunately, current practice of Russian business demonstrates low level of verbal communication of chief executives and businessmen that diminishes their opportunities and doesn’t let them fulfill themselves as high as possible.

It is known that courses on “Speech”, “Business communication”, “Business culture” are included in curriculums of many universities and colleges all over the world. These subjects are just climbing in Russia. Though a businessman is considered to be uneducated if they have low level of communication skills. Speech is the best passport of a person. If they want to be promoted, they should get particular knowledge and skills in the sphere of business communication.

Business practice in the 21st century is on the new stage of business relation development where professional training of future specialists for every sphere of social life including agriculture plays an important role. Taking into account the fact that nowadays Bashkir State Agrarian University is the so-called forge for training management personnel, economists, agricultural experts for agrarian industry of the republic of Bashkortostan, we must change our requirements for students themselves.

Today the very educated, creative and active young people become the main factor of economic growth and development of Bashkortostan, able to realize competing advantages of the region. Thus, current graduate of the agrarian university must get not only special knowledge and skills but they should be competent professionals that know organization and development principles of the society where they live and work, having basic skills of intelligent and educated communication, able to solve problems set by the life [2, p.54].

Therefore we, teachers, are facing a vital task to give the knowledge, to develop such common cultural and professional competences, such system of values and preferences that help our graduates, future specialists, to succeed in any sphere of our republic’s economy.

Today the Federal State Standard on Higher Professional Education of the third generation distinguishes new common cultural and professional competences of higher educational institution graduates. Their development is expected due to obligatory course on “Business communication”. The subject is included into the professional cycle and is a part of its basic part being related to Russian Language and Speech Culture, Rhetoric, Logics, Social Psychology, Ethics of state and municipal service.

The aims to study the course on “Business Communication” are as follows: to teach students to speak well and correctly, to develop speech image, to higher their level of theoretical and practical knowledge of speech culture, declamatory and polemics skills, to promote development of certain cultural, psychological and moral qualities as necessary background for their future successful professional activities [3, 5].

To be effective in communication is surely not very simple and rather time-consuming. There are theoretical as well as practical ways to solve it. To study theoretical issues of effective communication is a necessary but not sufficient condition to develop practical communication skills. Knowledge on business communication will change into particular skills of a manager or a specialist when they become an integral part of their activities and are used everywhere as much as possible. Thus it’s important to remember a concept: it’s no use to know, it’s necessary to be able to do; it’s not enough to be able to do, it’s necessary to act.

Young people seeking for better carriers, wishing to become managers, entrepreneurs, leading experts need to learn all the details of their profession as well as know behavior code in the society and the sphere of business. Their success will be mostly dependent on ability to create an individual image, to behave in a proper way in different situations, to set out ideas clearly. Eventually it will help to realize shaped plans, to become a successful person having good reputation among their business partners.

Mastering basics of business communication when studying a course on “Business communication” will help future specialists to interact with partners in better way using appropriate behavior strategies and policy aimed at achievement of compromise and cooperation. Knowledge of different psychotypes of business partners, customers, colleagues and managers, mastering manipulation skills will promote development of communication experience of a businessman necessary for development of civilized market relations.

Finally it should be noted that an expert in any field of activities can stay at the lowest level of the social hierarchy or achieve the highest one having become a highly-educated qualified professional. Communicative competence can help to realize dreams and become a successful person being respected among other business people. One Chinese wisdom says: if you want to make a person happy for a day give him a fish; if you want to make him happy for the whole life – teach him to fish [4, p.7].
