Analysis of Statistical Accounting of Patients with Pathology of the Temporomandibular Joint

Summary

Analysis of statistical accounting of patients was performed in the advisory clinic Municipal institution "Regional clinical hospital named after I. I. Mechnikov". The number of patients who came to the advisory appointment with a dental surgeon within the period from 2010 up to and including 2015 was analyzed. By doing so the patients with pathology of the temporomandibular joint were picked and the distribution of a qualitative composition of patients according to nosologic units was performed.

Key words: patients with diseases of the temporomandibular joint, nosologic units.

The objective of our work was the analysis of statistical accounting of patients with diseases of the temporomandibular joint for the period from 2010 up to and including 2015.

Recently the number of patients with diseases of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) has grown. The interest to this pathology remains rather high, as a lot of aspects of this issue remain disputable and underinvestigated till the present moment. The most frequent pathologies of the TMJ are arthritis, arthrosis and joint and muscle dysfunctions [A. A. Timofeev , S. V. Maksimcha, V. P. Novinsky 2012, V. A. Margunskaya, T. B. Lyudchik 2012]. [5, 6, 7, 8].

Nowadays diseases of the temporomandibular joint become rather spread. Changes in the structures of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) are most frequently connected with features of the individual structure of the dentoalveolar apparatus. While swalling, when masseter muscles cotract reflexively and surfaces of teeth close, a movement pattern of the lower jaw bone depends on the position of teeth in the dental arch and their correlation with each other. [1, 3].

Emotional tension, exercise stress and occlusive disharmony are the main reasons, which cause functional disorders of the masticatory apparatus balance and adaptive capacity of the body. As a result there are such symptoms as pain, muscular rigidity and fatigue, clicking and limitation of motion in the area of temporomandibular joints, the phenomenon of pain in ears, teeth attrition, odontoclasis and intense load on the alveolodental ligament [1, 2, 3 ,4].

Vulnerability and the most common reasons of functional disorders in the structures of temporomandibular joint are teeth, dental arch, and neuromuscular apparatus.

The major guarantor of the functional balance of the dentoalveolar apparatus is an optimal contact between teeth in the dental arch, and, to a great extent, genetic psychoemotional sphere of an individual [1, 3, 4, 6].

Analysis of statistical accounting of patients was performed in the advisory clinic Municipal institution "Regional clinical hospital named after I. I. Mechnikov". The number of patients who came to the advisory appointment with a dental surgeon within the period from 2010 up to and including 2015 was analyzed.

In 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 the following number of patients were advised, accordingly 4658, 4459, 4432, 4475, 4557, and 4524. Thus diseases of the temporomandibular joint were found in 708 patients who made 2.6% of the total number of advised patients.

The correlation of the total number of advised patients to the number of patients having diseases of the temporomandibular joint for the period from 2010 up to and including 2015 are shown in the diagram:

The following nosologic units were marked in patients having diseases of the temporomandibular joint: arthritis, arthrosis, pain-syndrome, Costen syndrome, and habitual dislocation. The quantitative correlation of nosologic units is shown in Table 1.

Conclusions:

1.

The performed statistical analysis of the number of advised patients for the period from 2010 up to and including 2015 showed that diseases of the temporomandibular joint make 2.6% of the total number of patients who came to get advice.

2.

Arthritis of the temporomandibular joint was the established diagnosis for most of the patients – 370.
