Intrapersonal Conflict as Harmonization Crisis of Identity

The results of theoretical analysis of the categories of “intrapersonal conflict” (IPC) and “harmony of the personality” is analyzed. An attempt to reveal the relationship of mechanism of IPC and psychosomatic disorders is performed.

Formulation of the problem. In modern society, in times of crisis, the humanity, more than ever, begins to look for ways to release from the state of instability, presumes about the psychological state and health. Therefore, one of the ways to overcome internal and intrapersonal conflicts is to harmonize the human condition. Inner harmony is a mechanism of our psyche that provides mental and psychological health at all levels.

Socially successful person is psychologically mature personality, takes life creative, can compose or “spice up” outer and inner world due to spontaneous activity of own psychic powers, has the perspective and objective view of reality that provides relief from internal destruction. Person who is capable of opening their own potential is psychologically healthy. The essence of the harmonious development of personality is fully revealed in the study of experience of psychologically safe individuals with the ability to feel happiness, enjoy the process of creative self-realization, the development of own resources and capabilities.

Plato said that health, like beauty, is determined by proportionality, requires “the consent of opposites” and is expressed in dimensional correlation of mental and physical.

Theoretical and methodological analysis of the problem shows that mainly social, interpersonal, intrapersonal and psycho-physiological factors of intrapersonal conflict (hereinafter IPC) are investigated. However, actually the thorough studies that have examined the impact of IPC on the components of psychological harmony of the individual are absent. At the same time, the problem of IPC as harmonization identity crisis in the national psychology is poorly studied.

The aim of this publication is the disclosure of the concept of a harmonious personality, study of psychological substructures of harmonious personality and relationship and impact of IPC on psychological harmony of personality.

The results of theoretical analysis. The harmonious personality is a psychologically balanced person, coordinated internally and externally. He is characterized by manifestation of integrity of mental properties and processes. Psychological harmony is produced in the process of education of person. The concept of harmony can be seen in various aspects. The main of them are dimensional existence of outer and inner life of the individual; bodily, mental and spiritual being; existence in different environments – natural, tangible, social. Another aspect of individual harmony is the coordination and functioning of the main areas of the individual.

Based on the theory of neurosis by K. Horney, we argue that the dynamic center forms a basic conflict between the attitude of “movement to the people”, “movement against” and “the movement from people”. Because of the fear of being split into parts, on the one hand, and the need to function as a single individual – on the other, the neurotic person makes desperate attempts to resolve the conflict. While he is able to create some similarities of artificial balance, there are always new conflicts and constantly need of new ways to neutralize them. Each step in this struggle for the unity of personality makes neurotic individual more hostile, helpless, indecisive, alienated from himself and others, and the result is that interference that are responsible for the conflict become even more insurmountable, and their actual removal is increasingly unattainable. Finally, all hope is lost and destructive behavioral responses are restoring that in turn generate new intrapersonal conflicts.

Solving interpersonal conflicts involves the application of basic principles and methods that are considering individual specifics can be used in different situations. These include: adequate assessment of the situation and the desire to identify the contradictions that have provided the cause of the conflict and caused anxiety, fear or anger; awareness of the existential meaning of the conflict, analysis of importance degree, evaluation of place and role in terms of consequences; localization of conflict causes, identify its substance; analysis of the causes of intrapersonal conflicts; the use of physical exercise, creative classes; feeling of muscle tense and then relaxing session of an individual; changing conditions and / or style of work if intrapersonal conflict occurs persistent because of unfavorable conditions of work; exploration the possibility of reducing the level of claims if skills and capabilities do not meet the aspirations and interests; testing the ability to forgive not only others, but oneself; increase the level of confidence; be able to identify priority needs and motives and focus to perform them firstly.

Thus, intrapersonal conflict, naturally is peculiar to internal structure of personality. Contradictions and struggle between different aspirations are inherit to personalities. Usually this struggle is within the rules and not violate the harmony of the individual. Harmonious personality is not a person that knows no internal struggle. But sometimes this fight becomes a priority that determines human behavior and the entire way of life.
