Modern English teaching methods in
the system of
higher education
Modern world tendencies to the spread of network
distance technologies opened up brand new perspectives of the educational
process development. Rational combination of such technologies with the
existing teaching methods and approaches became the guarantee of successful
educational activity and teacher-student cooperation.
Today almost all higher institutions develop and
introduce their own system of distance education. The notion of distance
education can be determined as a specific form of educational process based on
the implementation and practical application of the newest information and
communication technologies that provide effective continuous interactive
cooperation between all participants of the education activity independently of
their locality. The aim of such distance learning is giving the unlimited
possibility of working with the appropriate educational materials individually
or in groups and getting the necessary consultation at any convenient time and
place.
Distance learning isn’t suggested to be the form or
kind of part-time education or the type of student’s individual work or training.
It must be organized and carried out according to the content and methodological
goals of full-time educational process although the tuition methods and
specific character of teacher-student cooperation differ greatly because of the
new advantages of modern informational environment.
Distance form of education can be successfully applied
while learning foreign language at any stage of study. The effectiveness of
such study depends, first of all, on the quality of methodical materials which
accompany each lesson and ability of a teacher to control and motivate his
students to intensive individual work. Methodical materials for distance
learning must be directed to the individual development of foreign
communicative competence of students, gaining and training of all necessary
linguistic skills (vocabulary, grammar, speaking, listening and writing). They
have to provide all appropriate conditions to mastering a new learning material
by students with its further practical application and promote student’s
creative and scientific search.
According to
the educational tasks which face the teachers of higher school nowadays, the
methodology of distance foreign language learning must include and rationally
combine the following technologies:
ü Pedagogical
ü Information
Modern pedagogical technologies must be directed to
the development of cognitive and scientific activity of students, their
creativity and language erudition.
Besides, they have to correspond to didactic and practical goals of the
educational process. Here we can refer to:
· group discussions
· business role games
· method of Projects
· Case technology
· conferences
· presentations and seminars
They help not only to develop spontaneous speech but
also to increase the motivation of non-linguistic students to learn foreign
language, give the opportunity to evaluate own communicative skills, linguistic
competence and provide efficient self-control activity. These methods should be
applied taking into consideration the level of previous preparation of students,
specificity of their interests and future qualification.
To information technologies we can include modern technologies
and servers which are used to create, store and transmit the educational
material and also to maintain technically the distance learning on the base of
telecommunication means. They combine:
· synchronous (Web chat, video conferences and on-line seminars, Webinars,
Skype, ICQ, IRC, Telnet
· asynchronous (electronic books
and manuals, printed materials with exercises and tests, multimedia, Moodle
system, authentic audio and video materials, Web forums and Web pages)
While using such informational resources students get
the appropriate skills of reading, writing, speaking, advance their vocabulary,
form sociocultural competence and speech etiquette.
