K. Bekhozhin is the master of narrative poem

KalizhanBekhozhin, a national Kazakhstani writer, is one of those who devoted over fifty years of his life to the development and thriving of Kazakh literature.  His poems, critics, witty works are published in numerous editions [1.3].

One of his widely known historical poems is «Appaq-name» /Appaq - white/ (1974). This poem is about NizamiGandjavi, an Azerbaijani national classic poet. Historical facts say that in 1173 at the age of 32 years old Nizami married to a Kipchak girl named Appaq[1.100]. The poem mentioned above is based on this true story. The author not only gives a picturesque life-story about Nizami’s love towards Appaq, but also illustrates social and artistic personality of the poet.

The poems begins with the moment when a king having taken a girl as a slave loses his chances to get her sympathy.

Ñàéôòûң îðäàñû äà қàçûíàëû,

Îëæà àëòûí àéäàï àëғàí àç áà ìàëû?

Îñûíàó әì³ðø³í³ң àçäàí áåð³,

Қàáàғû әëäåíåãå æàçûëìàäû.

Әëã³ á³ð òұòқûí қûçäàí áîëäû ìåç³,

Áàëàíûң òàғûñû ғîé ò³ê ì³íåçä³.

Қàñûíà æàқûíäàñà ò³ñ³í қàéðàï,

Ұøқûíäàï çәð øàøàäû îòòû êөç³[1.190].

[The verse is given in author’s free translation

The kingdom of Saifowns big treasures

But it’s not enough

All the time it seems

The king is not pleased

The reason is in a slave girl

She is brave and speaks the truth

No one can touch her even look

She throws the fire from her eyes[1.190].

In the exposition of the story two young creatures see each other for the first time. From this very scene the plot begins to flourish.  They marry and have a son Mukash. The climax of the story takes place when Appaq watches a dream and tells Nizami about it. Here we see that Nizami is fully devoted to his poem «Shirin», the process of writing and loss of links with real life in a dream world. Denouement is represented by a tragic scene on peak of Kaff mountain where she loses forever her beloved.

In his poem K. Beckhozhin illustrates Nizami as a wise, thoughtful, deeply educated and a fair man of the time. Nizami’s inner world is shown with a great mastery. It is obviously seen in the poem meticulously describing Nizami’s mood and feelings to his beloved Kipchak girl Appaq. He reaches to understand the soul of Appaq. Meeting half way her inner intentions towards her motherland, people and her beloved father he replies the following way:

                          «Ïåðèçàòûì òүñ³íä³ì ìåí íàçûңäû,

Қûð қûçûñûң àққó òүñò³, қàç үíä³.

                          Æàááàð æàçñà êөðñåòåì³í äàëàңäû,

                          Ñàÿõàòïåí өòê³çåì³í æàçûңäû.

                          Àқøà òîòûì ұқòûì íàçäû ñûðûңäû,

                          Ìұңûң қàí áîï òàìûðûìà æүã³ðä³.

                          Қûçûë øàһқà åðåã³ñ³ï åì,

                          Áàñòàéûíøû àðíàï ñàғàí «Øûðûíäû» [1.220-221].

[The verse is given in author’s translation

«My angel I understand your feelings

You’re a free girl like a wild swan

I’ll try my best to bring you there

Where you in summer can bath you native land

My angel, I hear your soul cry every time

Your tears go through my veins like blood

I stood against my king so in this way

I pour out new poem «Shirin» devoted to your heart[1.220-221]

Nizami’s poems, written when the poet is overcome with grief after the death of Appaq, touch deeply readers’ hearts.

[The verse is given in author’s translation

Appaq, my honest beaty

I respect you my girl Shirin

I devote this poem to lovers

And wish it be eternal

Stone-hearted severe kings

Must bow their head before the beauties

Like my beloved Appaq

Khosrow will also be your victim

I’ll make Majnun very sad

With my words of love

Following my hints in the poem

The girl will speak to one who adores her.

Revealing heart at this extend,

I leave Layla with her beloved.

I open my heart

To spread my pain of love.

Oh, Appaq, I worship you

You must clear up my heavens

I will gush out for you

With my poem devoted to you[1.238-239á].

says the poet. Feeling suffer and sorrow Nizami devoted «Khosrow and Shiri and «Layla and Majnun» poems to his beloved Appaq.

«Appak name» is one of the poems which gives truly delivered image ofa creative man.Among readers it became one of the most favorite poems of K.Beckhozhin.
