Key words: ions Mg2+, serum, pregnancy, hypertension.

Introduction. Much attention in the pathogenesis of a number of obstetric complications is paid to a derangement of magnesium metabolism (preeclampsia and eclampsia) a deficit of magnesium ions in pregnancy may be one of the reason of growth retardation [1,2,3,4].

Object. To investigate the the blood serum concentration of Mg2+ ions of gravidas (the third trimester) during the winter period.

Materials and methods. 25 pregnant women with sings of hypertension in the third trimester of gestation were examined for blood serum magnesium content on the base of Municipal Maternity Home ¹ 1 in the Chernivtsi (the study was carried and during December-January). The magnesium content was evaluated by means of the reagents of the "Cormay" company, employing a standard solution with the magnesium concentration 0,82 mmol/l; "Cormay serum HN” was imsestigated for internal quality control. The study was carried out on the semi-automatic analyzer BA 88 (Mindray Biochemestry analyzer). The principle of determination of magnesium is its interaction with xylidole blue with the formation of a purple stained compound whose intensity is directly proportional to the magnesium concentration.

Results. The concentration of magnesium was found to vary from 0.13 to 0,97 mmol/l, the average content of magnesium constiting 0,59 ± 0,08 mmol/l at that, the purmissible lower limit being 0,66 mmol/l; the concentration of magnesium in 40% of the women under study was lower than 0,50 mmol/l, the latter being a high risk factor of the denelopment of pathologies of the mother and fetus. In general, the magnesium deficit was present in half of the gravidas examined by us. Conclusion. An additional examination survey of gravidas for the purpose of determining the magnesium content is an indispensible condition to avoid hypomagnesemia, as an essential factor of many pathological conditions, namely obstetric complications.
