The
importance of application information technologies in library work
In the
conditions of transition to the
informative society the
conflict between the
constantly increasing amount of knowledge,
generated by the society and intended for distribution in time and space, on the
one hand, and by limited possibilities
of Documentary Communications
System, the foundation of which is based on the printed transmitters, on the other hand, becomes sharp. The necessity of solving the mentioned conflict requires radical activation of works on
creation and implementation of new computer technologies in library activities’ practice. They should provide the transition to
corporate processing technologies of documentary flows and
formation in Ukraine of a single scientific information space, as well as the
development of intelligent technologies of analytic-synthetic
information processing and knowledge extraction.
Leading direction
of libraries’ modernization is its informatization: the introduction
and development of libraries in new information technologies, the organization
and usage of electronic resources, the introduction of multimedia technology,
the development of networking libraries, connection to the worldwide system
Internet. This leads to the creation of new business units, changes in
functional responsibilities of employees, involvement of experts from various
disciplines. Therefore, learning experiences of their colleagues librarians faced
the neccesity of developing new knowledge and skills.
After
examining the actuality of given problem, let’s consider some software systems
that are created for automation of libraries, and the problems of their choice.
The
software system "MARC". Scientific and
Production Association "InfoSystem" (Moscow, Russia), established in
1990, has developed a software of the family "Mark", which can be
implemented in any library with their technological and organizational
characteristics and amounts of funds.
Local
variant "Mark" is the ideal mean of
automation for small and middle-sized libraries, which provides the main library
processes: completimg, cataloguing, printing of output forms, bibliographic
search. Second generation system - a network variant of
"Mark" includes 6 automized
workstations: "Completing",
"Processing", "Subscription", "Search", "Storage",
"Administrator", which
work in a local network. It is the best mean for automating middle and large
libraries. The system of new
generation of "Mark-SQL" - a complex
automation of library processes. It allows you to create electronic
catalogue, serve readers, keep statistics, perform orders of
literature online. A variant "Mark-SQL Internet" is a
separate system, through which you access the database of libraries
to search and review of
documents via
the Internet.
WKS (workstations):
•
Local variant: processing, search, completing;
•
Network variant: processing, search, completing,
subscription, administrator, book depository;
•
"Mark-SQL": processing,
search, acquisition, subscription; administrator. Has typical Web-server
search, Ukrainian interface.
Software system ALEPH. The
system was developed at the Hebrew University (Jerusalem) by the group of
programmers, analysts and librarians. The company Aleph Yissum took over the
support of works on creation new versions. Support Aleph for users is
accomplished by the company ExLibris, which has a representation, in
particular, in Kiev.
Program Aleph is an integrated, multilingual library program that has a
very flexible adaptation machine to the necessity of a concrete library and
provides complex automatization of all processes of library technology. Tools
allow you to maintain grafic images and full texts of documents;
MARC-compatible formats; ISO-standards, information-reaching languages of
descriptor and classification types with available system of the links, authority
files, bar codes, data transfer protocols for work in local, corporate and
global networks; WWW-server.
Modules: administration, cataloging, book loan; inventory
(for barcodes) registration periodicals; complectaition; fines; batch jobs;
Servers Web, OCLC, Z 39.50.
Functions: completing, cataloging, multidimensional search, delivery of
documents; support of technologies of work with barcodes, access support to the
electronic catalogue on the Internet.
