Ways of overcoming the difficulties in translating English original movies and documentary films into the Kazakh language at training the intending translators

The article considers linguistic and cultural difficulties of film translation from the English into the Kazakh language. This article helps students to develop their analytic and interpretive skills during the translation process. Foreign movies are watched by different viewers, lock-in effect the age. The volume of this subject is very widespread; therefore it needs more investigation to prove that this theme is very important to translators for the future of the Republic of Kazakhstan, especially, comparing the Kazakh and English languages. Writing of this work being a part of professional training of specialties pursues an object that presents a need to systematize the theoretical knowledge on the given theme.

Translation, then, consists of studying the lexicon, grammatical structure, communication situation, and cultural context of the source language text, analyzing it in order to determine its meaning, and then reconstructing the same meaning using the lexicon and grammatical structure which are appropriate in the receptor language and its cultural context. Translation is a kind of activity which inevitably involves at least two languages and two cultural traditions [1].

The film translation mode is connected with several factors, such as historical circumstances, traditions, the technique to which the audience is accustomed, as well as on the position of both the target and the source cultures in an international context. This article focuses on movie translation in view of linguistic and cultural aspects from the English into Kazakh language and to this effect television translation is a good academic investigation. Analysis of television translation constitutes an excellent material for further research, and it is only disregarded here for reasons of clarity and lucidity of argumentation.

We’ll try in this article to dismantle the complex web linking the three components: linguistics, culture and movie translation analysis. As it is known, the translation process is not a simple replacement of units of one language by units of other language. It is a complex process including number of difficulties, which are necessary for overcoming to the translator and interpreter. One of receptions, which help the interpreter, is the transformations.

As we know, good theory is based on information gained from practice. Good practice is based on carefully worked-out theory. The two are interdependent [2].

We have analyzed such movies of different genres as “Avatar”, “Amelia”, “Quantum of Solace” and the BBC documentary film “Ice world” in two languages. Here there are some comments on translation of these movies presented in the cinemas of the country into the Kazakh language:

1) “We’d like to talk to you about taking over his contract. And since your genome is identical to his, you could step into his shoes, so to speak”. The sentence is translated as «Оның келісім-шартын саған аудару туралы сөйлескіміз келеді. Сенің геномың оныкімен бірдей болғандықтан, былайша айтқанда, оның орнына баруға болады». “To step into his contract” is an idiom and it means to continue a job or work when they are suddenly or unexpectedly unable to do. In this sentence, the translator translated the idiom’s meaning with simple words.

2) “The Avatar program is a bad joke”. This sentence is translated as «Аватар бағдарламасы әшейін дүние». There, it’s used the lexical transformation, the words “a bad joke” are translated as «әшейін дүние», although the word “bad” means «жаман» and the word “joke” means «әзіл, қалжың». In this sentence, the translator has decided to translate as «әшейін дүние», because the meaning of the sentence depends on the context.

3) “I recalculated the fuel. I’ll cost them nine percent”. The translator translated as “Жанармайды қайта есептедім. Олар тоғыз пайыз төлеуі қажет”. Our translation version is “Жанармайды қайта есептедім. Төлем тоғыз пайызға бағаланған”.

The translator used the modal verb “қажет”; the original version is given in future. Therefore the main meaning has changed.

4) “When I saw that little plane, it lifted me above the Kansas prairie” is translated as «Сол кішкентай ұшақты көрген кезде, мені Канзас прериясына көтерді». The second translation version is “Сол кішкентай ұшақты көрген кезде, төбем Канзас көк жиегіне көтерілгендей болды”. In the second translation version “prairie” is translated as көк жиек”. If we compare two different versions, the only difference is between equivalents «прерия» and көк жиек”. Both of equivalents are correct but for movie translation “көк жиек” is more proper. Because it is simple version and it’s easy to understand from first time of hearing for viewers.

5) Vesper's boyfriend, Yusef Kabira, the one who was abducted in Morocco, the one she was trying to save”. This sentence is translated «Жігіт Веспер, Юсеф Кабира. Оны Мароккода ұрлап әкеткен, оны құтқармақ боп әуреленген». The first, the translator has divided a sentence into three sentences. It affects changing the meaning of the sentence. The word “Vesper's boyfriend” means «Веспердің жігіті». But the translator translated it as «Жігіт Веспер». The translation has no any meaning.

In conclusion, we would like to say that the movie translation must be easy understandable and accurate with keeping the main meaning and style. It’s a film and it’s art. Therefore, viewers should enjoy watching a movie. So during the watching movies we don’t replay the action and of course the translation. Therefore, viewers should understand the translation parallel with the action. For this purpose clarity of sentences and words are very important. According to the words of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N.Nazarbayev “We should conduct modernization of Kazakh language” [3]. For our opinion, it will be a good method for developing the Kazakh language by helping to organize proper translation of movies available and easily perceived by audience.
