THE CHOICE OF FUTURE PROFESSION is a tremendously important problem for young people. The course “We Choose Our Future Profession “ is created by a well-known scientist E.A. Klimov and it is adapted to the lessons of English  by T.Yu. Amosova. The set of exercises coincides with the aim of the intensive course of studying English. These exercises help students both to understand the material and to practice English.

            This course consists of the “Teachers’ Guide” and the “Students’ Book”. It may be used by the teachers to inform the students of the 9-th form of schools, colleges, gymnazias when they start to think about future occupation. This course may be revised at the 11-th form to compare the results of self analysis.

 THE CHOICE OF FUTURE PROFESSION (TEACHERS’ GUIDE)

LESSON 1

Dear friends. Today we’ll begin studying the course “The Choice of future occupation” This course was created by our well – known psychologist E.A.Klimov. He analyzed professions, the experience of different groups of people of different age in order to understand what it is necessary to choose the profession which will help you not only to earn money but to be a happy person.

            Now you are boys and girls. You are the youth. Your parents are responsible for you, they feed you and breed you. They buy clothes for you to look modern and books for you to be clever. But it will be very soon when you are grown-ups.   You will be responsible for your parents and for your own family. Our boys will become very thoughtful fathers and husbands , our girls will become  wonderful mothers and wives.

            First of all  let’s speak about our boys. Let’s imagine that they have the profession that suits them. In this case they will not be irritated in the evening even after a very difficult, serious day. In such a situation their wives and their children will be glad and happy to take care of them.

            But we may take another imaginary situation when a man does not like his occupation. That’s why he is tired and irritated every day, every evening. Of course such a family will not be happy. In Ancient times all men were hunters and fishermen. They had to bring food to their caves. There were no other professions for men. Now this function still exists. Men must earn and bring money to buy food and clothes. But there is a good variety of professions. Some of them suit you, some of them do not suit you. It’s tremendously important to understand what your own profession is.

            Now let’s speak about our girls. They will soon become mothers and wives. You should understand that each woman usually has four professions: the profession of a mother, the profession of a wife, the profession of a house–keeper and one more profession in order to be a ship but not sheep in the society in different circumstances of ever changing life. And you, girls, should remember that there will be very difficult to find time to change the profession. We   may   imagine the situation that you have already finished school, have entered this or that Institute or University, have graduated from it and you must work from day to day. Suddenly you have understood that this profession does not suit you, it  is not interesting for you . But now you are mothers and wives and you have a lot of work to do. Of course some of the women may have only three genuine professions: a mother, a wife and a house-keeper because their husbands  will be able to earn money to keep the family. And you should know that this is the best way for a woman to stay at home and to grow the children. But life is difficult and expensive, and a great deal of women ought to work. Besides a lot of women prefer to work (even if their husbands get enough money) to feel themselves active members of the society.

.           In order to understand that the profession, you are going to choose, suits you, you should analyze yourselves and you should analyze shady sides of the profession,  you are getting acquainted with.

            Each profession has its positive and negative features.

            Let’s analyze the profession of a doctor. You think that you like the profession. But do you understand that it is necessary to take care of sick people, to listen to their moans, to bandage their wounds, to watch their wounds bleeding.  Will you stand it?

            Or you have decided to become a pediatrician, i.e. a doctor who treats children. You have decided to choose this profession because you love children, you like to read them books, to tell them stories, to play with them But all these things are possible when we speak about healthy  children. But can you stand groans, moans cries of children who are ill, can you stand their sad eyes full of pain?

            Each of you likes to watch film stars because men are handsome, strong and women are beautiful, delicate.  But now let’s imagine what they must do during their rehearsals. Actors and actresses have to learn, learn, learn and learn one and the same role. When the role is learnt it is necessary to play it, to master it. And if we speak about a theatrical stage, it is necessary to play the role again and again, to perform, perform and perform one and the same act. Besides there are different situations at home; children or relatives should be ill, but they ought to go to the theatre, smile, laugh,  if the role requires it, in spite of the fact that the spirit is not bright.

            Sometimes actors and actresses stay without work for five, ten or even fifteen years because they are not invited by producers. This is the most dangerous, the most unpleasant period of their life. So they must be strong enough not to lose control, to find an occupation for this period of life.

            Now we’ll try to analyze some nuances of the work of geologists. Each of you likes to go hiking. You like to live in a tent, you like to sit by the fire speaking to your friends, listening to their stories, singing songs, listening to the sounds of the guitar. You like to look at the sky watching stars.

            But now imagine that you are to walk and to walk from day to day, you must dig the ground from day to day, you have to live without conveniences, you can’t see your husband or wife for many weeks. And this is from year to year.

            Let’s take the profession of a teacher. It’s necessary to communicate with children, with adolescents. Not all of you can stop quarrels, to praise or to punish a pupil when it is necessary. It’s necessary not only know much but to teach pupils and to explain a lot. Suppose you like all these activities. But there is one more thing which is not pleasant. It’s checking and checking pupils’ control works, dictations, vocabularies, exercises.

            If we analyze the profession of an advocate, we’ll understand that it is necessary to defend people, to protect their rights, to find the slightest nuances of their character to win the process. But sometimes you will lose the case. Will you stand it?

            When we speak about the occupation of a barber or a hairdresser, we know that such specialists help people to be handsome and beautiful. But we should realize that they have to be on feet from morning till night, that they must answer the questions of their clients from morning  till  night and they must not be irritated even when they make a hair dress to a very gloomy or grumpy person.

            So in order to choose a profession you should analyze yourself and the profession you are choosing. Each profession has its pluses and minuses, and you must understand that you can stand the negative qualities of this profession or trade.

            II. Read exercise 1. Be ready to retell it.

I.                   a) Pronounce the following words after me, try to remember them:

SYMPATHY, ANTYPATHY, PROFESSION, OCCUPATION, TRADE, MAKES YOU CHOOSE, MAKES YOU IGNORE, POPULARITY, SNOW-WHITENESS, DOCTORS’ SMOCKS, ROMANTICISM, GEOLOGISTS

       b) Work in pairs (Ex.2) Read and translate the mistakes which are usually made by the youth when they choose the profession.

III. Work in pairs (Ex.3) Memorize the statements to prevent mistakes: a) read                 b) translate, c) translate from Russian into English

LESSON 2

Today you will start analyzing yourselves. But first of all we’ll revise the previous lesson, previous material in order to remember as many lexical units as it is possible. You should know that the material of Lesson 1 will be the beginning of the topic ‘My Future Profession”.

I .a) Read exercise 1.

      b)Find and translate the following phrases:

            make mistakes, the result of one’s wrong choice, you have got a profession, come across smth., shady things, many nuances, you’ve spent much time, which are necessary, a good specialist.                                                                                      II. Look through exercise 2. Give English equivalents to the following Russian words:

            ñîâðåìåííûé, ñëåäîâàòü çà äðóçüÿìè, ñèìïàòèÿ ê ÷åëîâåêó, àíòèïàòèÿ ê ÷åëîâåêó, ñèìïàòèÿ ê ÷åëîâåêó çàñòàâëÿåò…, àíòèïàòèÿ ê ÷åëîâåêó çàñòàâëÿåò…, áåëîñíåæíîñòü äîêòîðñêèõ õàëàòîâ, ïîïóëÿðíîñòü àêòåðîâ, ðîìàíòèêà ãåîëîãîâ.

LESSON 4      CLASSES OF PROFESSIONS

Today we’ll continue the analysis of different professions. You have already understood that there are 5 types of professions. But now you will  realize  that each group may be divided into 3 more groups. Some of you like to control your friends, to check the words, to compare different pictures; some of you like to influence somebody or something; some of you like to create some new things, new ideas that were not used before. And you should know that all  these  activities are very important.

            Thus, for example, if we take ART, we’ll understand that an art critic likes to check the words of others and put them marks. Actors and actresses influence feelings, our state of mind our emotional sphere. Playwrights and composers create their works themselves.

Look attentively at the table of the classes of professions (2). In the vertical column you can see the types of professions you have already got acquainted with: nature, technology, human being, sign, art.

In the horizontal column you can see the indications:

 F – to find, to check, to mark, to distinguish;

CH – to change, to influence;

CR – to create, to cause the result.

I. Now let’s take the professions of the group NATURE and arrange them according to the table of the classes of professions

A geologist and a forestry expert do not change or create anything. They find, mark, distinguish, check ( column 1 )

A dentist, a surgeon, a veterinary surgeon, an agronomist do not only find, mark and check, they also change the state of our health influencing the organism, influencing the growth of plants (column 2 ).

Scientific workers of botany, zoology, biology, medicine find, check, influence, but the main definition is the creation of something new: new ideas, proof, a new kind of plants ( column 3).

II. The second type is TECHNOLOGY.

Use the proper column for the following occupations: builder, examiner, fitter, constructor,       technologist, engineer, driver.

A technologist, an engineer, an examiner represent the 1-st group ( to find, to mark to distinguish, to check )

A fitter, a driver, a builder show the qualities of the 2-d group (to change, to influence )

A constructor belongs to the 3-d group ( to create, to cause the result )

III. HUMAN  BEING is the 3-d group of professions. The following professions and occupations will be arranged according to table 2 : a lecturer, a film producer, a librarian, a psychologist, a teacher, a barber,  a journalist, a nurse, a policy inspector, a hairdresser, a trainer, a pediatrician.

A librarian, a nurse, a policy inspector – 1-find;

A lecturer, a teacher, a barber, a hairdresser, a pediatrician, a trainer – 2 – change;

A film producer – 3 – create.

IV.SIGN  is the fourth group of the profession

            The following given professions and occupations of this type will be distributed according to table 2: a program maker, a corrector, a typist, a teacher of computer operating, a computer operator, an economist.

            A corrector, a computer operator, a typist, an economist – these are occupations of the first group ( to find, to mark to check );

            A teacher of computer operating is placed in the 2-d column ( to change, to influence );

            A program maker is put into the 3-d column (to create)

V.ART. The following occupations (professions or trades) should be grouped according to table 2 : a decorator, a writer, an art critic, a playwright, a painter, a hair dresser, a literary critic, an actor, an architect, a sculptor, a composer, a designer.

            An art critic, a literary critic,  - 1 (to find , to mark, to check, to distinguish )

            A decorator, an actor, an actress, a hair dresser – 2 ( to change, to influence )

            A writer, a playwright, a composer, an architect, a sculptor, a painter – 3 ( to create, to cause the result )

            So all the given professions are grouped into three columns according to table 2. Give the definitions of professions and occupations with the help of the characteristics of each column.

            For example: a geologist finds minerals, stones –“F”;

                                 a dentist changes a bad tooth – “CH”;

                                 a scientific worker of biology – “CR” – creates new methods for better development of alive tissue.

            Let’s take column “F” and let’s give definitions to the occupations of all five groups, i.e.            Nature-“NF”

Technology “TF”

Human Being “HF”

Sign “SF”

Art “AF”

            NF- a forestry expert finds ill trees and animals, checks the state of the forest and the forest life

            TF – a technologist – checks new technological systems;

                     an engineer – checks the work of technical equipment;

                     an examiner – checks the quality of details or ready to work things;

            HF(CH) – a psychologist finds positive and negative features of a person to help him develop positive and diminish negative;

                     a journalist – finds interesting people, interviews them, finds interesting material, events to  write an article;

                    a pediatrician – checks the state of health of children, finds the reason of their illness;

                    a nurse – marks the mixture for every patient, checks the temperature of each patient, check the tidiness of bed sheet, clothes for patients;

                    a policy inspector – checks the document

            SF – a corrector – finds mistakes in texts;

                     a typist – types on a typing machine;

                     a computer operator – finds necessary programs, marks new elements;

                   an economist – checks the income and outcome of finance;

                   a finance inspector – checks the work of enterprises dealing with money.

            AF – an art critic – finds positive and negative features in pieces of art;

                    a literary critic – finds positive and negative features in novels, stories, poems

Now we’ll take the second column “CH” and give the definitions to the occupations of five groups, i.e.

            Nature – N CH

            Technology –T CH

            Human Being – H CH

            Sign – S CH

            Art – A CH

N CH – a dentist – influences the state of teeth;

            a surgeon – influences the processes of our organism because of cutting out some organs or parts of them in order for the patient to live on;

            a veterinary surgeon – influences the state of health of animals that are ill, treating them;

            an agronomist – influences the growth of plants;

            a teacher of biology –influences the knowledge of pupils.

T CH – a fitter –changes the form of things, adjusting (putting together ) different parts into a whole thing (a machine, an apparatus);

            a driver – influences the movement of the car;

H CH – a teacher –influences the knowledge of the pupils;

            a trainer – influences physical and moral state of each member of the team;

            a barber –changes the length of men’s hair, the form of the hair dress;

            a hairdresser –changes the form of women’s hair,

S CH – a teacher of computer operating – influences the state of knowledge of pupils in the field of computer operation;

A CH – a decorator – changes the scenery of the stage, changes the drawings of the walls, of shop windows;

            an actor – influences the state of our emotions, changes the appearance and behavior according to the role

            The third column is CR ( create ). Give the definition of 5 groups of occupations.

LESSON 5        CLASSES OF PROFESSIONS    (THE MEANS OF WORK )

People are different. Their wishes and abilities are different. Each person prefers different means of work. Some people like to work with their hands, some people prefer machines, some people prefer using an apparatus, some people use their functional means.

            When we mean the work with hands, we mean sculptors, painters, architects, fitters, dress-makers.

            If we compare a machine and an apparatus, we should know that each movement, of the machine is operated by a man; each pressing of the button of on apparatus provides several operations.( a car is a machine ). A computer operator uses a button, and several operations are taking place ( a computer is an apparatus ).

            Functional means are different. Singers use their voices, dances use their movements, gestures. Actors use mobile features of the face, words, gestures in their work.

 Task.

1.      Look through the examples of each column. Remember them.

2.       Study characteristics. Remember them.

3.      Be ready to write a dictation using a proper square ( a mannequin, an instructor of driving).

4.      Be ready to give characteristics to the following professions :

The 1-st variant                                      The 2-nd variant                                       The 3-d variant

1. a teacher of  a foreign language     1. a surgeon                           1. a  physiotherapeutic doctor

2. an ambulance driver                      2.a  pediatrician                       2. a  teacher of handicraft

3. a textile worker                              3.a  teacher of computer operating    3.a driver

5.      Consult the table of Different Units of Professions. Check your answers.

LESSON 6   THE TABLE OF THE CONDITIONS OF WORK

            There are 5 items we should pay attention to. Some people like to work in the open air (forestry experts, shepherds, archaeologists, geologists ).

            Some people like to work in usual conditions (living conditions: in the rooms, libraries, theatres, i.e. writers, hairdressers, laboratory assistants, jewelers, accountants, book-keepers ).

            Some people prefer unusual conditions (pilots, sailors, stewardesses, rescuers ).

            And there is a group of people who can be responsible  for the work of other people, their steps in the life course. There are people of high moral qualities (judges, teachers, surgeons).

Task.

1.Study the table of Conditions of Work.

2. Study the examples of each column.

3. Study the characteristics of each table

4.Be ready to write down a dictation using a proper column ( an engraver, a stewardess, a geologist, a lawyer)

5 Be ready to give characteristics to the following professions: a nursery- school teacher, an accountant, a sailor, a forestry expert

.

            THE LESSON OF REVISION

Today you will write a topic “ I Choose My Future Profession “.

1.      revise Lesson I ( Task 1 ). Find out the most important sentences which will be the beginning of your topic. Write down the sentences using the first person singular or plural ( I choose or We choose )

2.      Write down what you know about the mistakes that are usually made by young people.

3.      Revise Task 3. Write down the ideas how to prevent these mistakes.

4.      Write down how many types of profession you know.  Mention the type (types ) of the profession you belong to according to the “ Differentiation Diagnostic Inquiry” by Klimov. Say if the result of the test coincide with your own understanding of this problem.

5.      Look through Table 2. Write down what classes of profession you know. Start your sentences with the words: “Some people like to find to check, some people like to change, to influence, some people like to create. I like to…”

6.      Analyze Table 3. Speak about different means of work (hands, apparatus, machines, functional means). Give several examples for each of them. Say what you like to work with. Prove your answer speaking aboutcharacteristic features that suit you.

7.      Try to describe your future profession. Compare the choice you have made in each table  with the profession you are going to choose.

8.      If you haven’t chosen a profession yet, study the examples of the professions and occupations in the columns of each table. Describe one of them paying attention to all characteristics given for it.

THE CHOICE OF FUTURE OCCUPATION         ( STUDENTS’ GUIDE )

LESSON 1

1.      Dear friends, each of you will soon choose a profession. A person may make some mistakes when he chooses this or that profession.

     Imagine for a minute that you have got a profession  which doesn’t suit you. When you chose this occupation, you didn’t know about it. But now, when you must work from day to day, you’ve come across a lot of shady things, a lot of nuances that don’t please you.. But you have already spent a lot of time learning things which are necessary to be a good specialist.

II. What are the mistakes you should avoid? The main mistakes are as follows:

1.      You think that the profession is not modern.

2.      You simply follow your friends and choose the profession to accompany them.

3.      Your own sympathy towards a person makes you choose the profession of your adult friend, or vice a versa ( your antipathy towards a person makes you ignore his or her profession).

4.      Sometimes you like the profession by the sight of some elements, for example by the snow-whiteness of doctors’ smocks, or by the popularity of actors or actresses, or by romanticism of geologists.

III. What should you do to prevent these mistakes?

1.      You should know mistakes and you should know yourselves, you should know the mechanism of different processes that are taking place in your organism, in your body, in your head. It means that you should know the possibilities of your memory, attention, perception, logic analysis, etc.

2.      It would be useful to cognize yourself and to match your abilities with the standards of the profession you are choosing.

3.      You must know that the process of the choice of your profession is a durable process and you are to be the explorers on the island of professions.

4.      Try to understand what you are interested in, what your abilities are. Try to study your character, temperament, your nature.

5.        You are to consult adults: teachers, parents, friends of your family, doctors, psychologists, etc .

6.      On having chosen your occupation, make a plan of further preparation for the profession. Don’t be afraid of difficulties. Be persistent and strong-willed.

IT WAS YOUR FIRST STEP TOWARDS YOUR FUTURE PROFESSION. GOOD LUCK

LESSON 2

DIFFERENTIATION DIAGNOSTIC INQUIRY

            Instruction for the test

You should put marks “+” and “-“ in the squares with the same figures. Two parts of the alternative question should be answered.

F.e. WHAT DO YOU PREFER 1a) TO TAKE CARE OF ANIMALS

                                            or    1b) TO OPERATE MACHINES ?

            If you prefer to take care of animals the results are as follows:

                                               1a) +   1b) –

            If you prefer to operate machines, the results will be different:

                                               1a)  -   1b)  +

            You must not put            +    +  or

                                                   _    _

Be attentive. If you don’t like both variants, you should imagine that there are no other variants for you to choose.

Put “+” where the preference is a bit larger, put “-”  in the square where the dislike is a  stronger.

MY FUTURE PROFESSION

Each of us will soon choose a profession. We know that young people may make mistakes choosing the profession. Some of these mistakes are:

1) we think that the profession is not modern;

2) we simply follow our friends;

3) our sympathy to a person makes us choose the profession of our adult friend; or vice a versa: our antipathy makes us ignore the profession of a person whom we do not like;

4) sometimes we like the profession by the sight of some elements, i.e. by the snow-whiteness of doctors’ smocks

            In order to prevent these mistakes we should know the possibilities of our body, mind, nervous system. We should know the processes which are taking place in our organism. We should know the mechanisms of these processes.  It means that we should know the possibilities of our memory, attention, perception, logic. It is important to know our character ( temper ) and temperament.

            We know that there are 5 types of professions

 1) NATURE,

 2)TECHNOLOGY,

3)HUMAN BEING,

4)SIGN,

5)ART.

As for me, I am a person of ____________________________________________________.

            We know that some people like to find, to make, to check, to distinguish; some people like to change, to influence somebody or something; some people like to create, to cause the result.  As for me, I like_________________________________________________________________________.

            We know that people use their voice, movements, gestures, mobile features of their face. Singers use their voice. Dancers use their body to express their feelings. Lectures, guides use words to give information. All of them use functional means.

We know that surgeons, dress- makers, fitters, hair-dressers use hands in their work.

Very many people use machines or apparatus.  People who like to control every movement of their cars use machines. People who like to press the button to cause the result of several movements or operations, use apparatus. (An ambulance doctor, an instructor of driving use machines. Teachers of computer operating, programmers, physiotherapeutic doctors use apparatus.

            As for me, I prefer___________________________________________________________________ .

            There are people who work in the open air in spite of the changes of weather ( archaeologists, geologists, forestry experts).

            A lot of people work in living conditions.( usual conditions ): accountants, book-keepers, economists, librarians, jewelers, writers, hair-dressers.

Very many people work in unusual conditions ( pilots, sailors, stewardesses, rescuers ).

            There is a large group of people of high moral qualities: judges, teachers, doctors, nurses, advocates, surgeons, psychologists. These people are responsible not only for their own work but for the work of  other people. They take care  of  others.

            As for me I am a person of ____________________________________________________________.

So the formulae of my wishes is……………………………………………………..

            The formulae of my profession is________________________________________.

These two formulae coincide. It means that I imagine my future profession quite clearly and it suits me. (These two formulae do not coincide. It means that I must analyze myself and the profession again. But some of my inclinations may help me improve some levels of the job or to find a better way in my life).
