The Influence of Russian-Ukrainian Crisis on
Professional Communication IT-Specialists
The research is devoted to the search of
influence of foreign policy crisis between Russia and Ukraine on the joint work
of specialists of IT-industry, as well as determine its nature and scope.
Key words: politics, influence, crisis, Russia,
Ukraine, information technologies.
An extraordinary change of power has happened in
Ukraine in February 2014. This event was informal named "Euromaidan"
and it was a continuation of the
political crisis in Ukraine, 2013-2014.
After the end of riots on the streets of
Kiev, southeast regions
of Ukraine began mass protesting
against the new government. Crimea
unilaterally seceded from Ukraine and join
Russia, Donetsk and Lugansk region
started many months armed conflict with
the current government.
The
adoption of the Crimea and support of Ukraine southeast militias led to stress
of social ties between residents of Russia and Ukraine, as well as a number of
economic sanctions by the EU and the US. Users of social networks were
especially active, often expressing their point of view in an offensive manner.
Because of economic sanctions, there was a sharp drop of the ruble exchange
rate (from 35 rubles per US dollar on 01/02/2014 to 68 rubles per US dollar on
01/02/2015)[1]. A similar situation occurred with the Ukrainian currency.
Hryvnia exchange rate against the US dollar fell by 2 times for the period
February 2014 - February 2015[2].
Today a year after the change of power in Ukraine and active
propaganda struggle, it is interesting to know whether the influence
of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis communications of professional IT-specialists in Russia and Ukraine. For this purpose various representatives of the two countries were invited to participate in the survey, which was to determine the presence and the nature of the impact of
the crisis on the experts.
The survey consisted of
the following questions:
1. What
country are you a citizen of?
2. What
country territory are you living in this
moment?
3. What
is your profession in the field of
IT?
4. Did
the Russian-Ukrainian crisis affect
your professional career?
5. Have
you ever worked with specialists from the
other side of the conflict?
6. Did
you feel tension while working with specialists from other side of the
conflict?
7. Did
you have a feeling that the representatives
of the other side of the conflict
dislike you?
The survey was conducted during the period 25.02.2015 - 03.05.2015,
using the Internet service Google Docs,
which enabled a completely
anonymous survey, without jeopardizing
the exposure of the respondents.
Total number, participated in the survey, is 48 respondents; 30 of them are the citizens of the Russian Federation and
18 are the citizens of the Ukraine.
The results of the survey are presented
in the diagrams:

The data obtained can
give us enough information about the professional relationship of
IT-specialists in Russia and the Ukraine. After analyzing the survey results
and visualizing them with the aid of diagrams, we can conclude that, in
general, the representatives of the IT-sector have rather responsible attitude
to their work, they respect their colleagues and maintain a high level of
professionalism. Certainly the conflicts may have some influence, but on a
national basis conflicts we could notice about 6% of the respondents, which is
small enough, and thus we can interpret these results as accidental cases that
do not have a major impact on the situation in general.
