CULTURAL LIFE OF CHERKASY REGION IN 1991–2001 YEARS IN THE CONTEXT OF NATIONAL REVIVAL: TO THE HISTORIOGRAPHY OF PROBLEM

To study historical and cultural processes in their regional manifestation is an important precondition of recreating the integral pattern of the general state of affairs, problems and tendencies in the country’s culture. Nowadays this approach of researches is getting especially urgent in Ukraine because in the Soviet period the development of national and cultural problems wasn’t stimulated. So, such a cultural and various region as Cherkashchyna hasn’t become a subject of scientists’ interest till up to now and this was the cause to choose this theme of the scientific research.

By the analysis of the literature of the researching problem there was an attempt to unite the historiography of independent Ukraine in a unitary system. For 1990s years the lack of scientific researches of the problem mentioned above is typical.

Dissertations and monographs in which scientists researched cultural and artistic life (or its aspects) of Ukraine or a separate region, scientific and documental books and publicistic ones, encyclopedias, anthologies and various reference books, literature about local history in which separate aspects of cultural life of Cherkasy region were shown, well-illustrated informative and advertising books devoted to memorable dates, about culture and cultural intelligentsia of Cherkasy region, scientific articles of the themes mentioned above began to appear in 2000s years.  

To investigate the cultural and scientific life of Ukraine of the period of the state independence Ukrainian scientists began from the end of 1990s years. Thus, in 1999 N. A. Kulyk defended the dissertation «Cultural processes in Ukraine of 90s years of the 20th century (on the example of the state cultural establishments)» [1], in which the approaches of cultural processes in our country in 1991–1998 years were substantiated and the tendencies of their development were analyzed. 

Dissertations which investigated the cultural and artistic life of a separate region of Ukraine the Ukrainian scientists among which there were historians and art critics O. O. Bakovetska [2], H. D. Boreiko [3], S. V. Vytkalov [4], P. Kh. Datsenko [5] and others began to carry out, on the whole, beginning 2000s years.

For the first time, the regional cultural and artistic problems of one of the regions of Ukraine the chronological boundaries of which were 1991–2011 years became the subject of the comprehensive analysis in the dissertation of S. V. Vytkalov «Cultural and artistic life of Rivnenshchyna of the period of the state independence of Ukraine» in 2011 [4].

Cultural and artistic life of Cherkasy region of 1991–2001 years till up to now hasn’t been investigated by scientists although some aspects of it were researched in scholarly works of historians. Thus, O. V. Melnychenko in her dissertation made a comprehensive analysis of the development of museums and preservation of monuments in Cherkasy region in the second half of the 20th century – the beginning of the 21st century [6].

So, the author made an attempt to unite the historiography of independent Ukraine in a unitary system. At the end of the 20th century – in the beginning of the 21st century dissertations and monographs in which cultural and artistic life (or its aspects) of Ukraine or a separate region were researched appeared, but there wasn’t made a comprehensive analysis of the cultural and artistic life of Cherkasy region of the period of the state independence of Ukraine. It was determined that from the end of the 20th century the literature about local history, informative and advertising books about culture and cultural intelligentsia of the region, notes and articles about prominent personalities who were the founders of the cultural life of the region, scientific articles of the themes mentioned above were published.

On the basis of the appliance of the general scientific methods (analysis, synthesis, description, explanation) the goal was achieved and planned tasks were realized. It was found out that the cultural-artistic life of Cherkashchyna of the period of its independence hadn’t been fully researched yet. The materials of the article may be useful for further study of the history of Ukraine, the history of Ukrainian culture and the history of separate regions of Ukraine of the period of the independence of Ukraine.
