Modern Educational technologies in English language
learning.
English is an International and
official language and it is a language of employability. It is a crazy language
for all learners and users. English language learning depends on various
factors which are related to effective teacher, effective teaching and
effective teaching methods. So English language teaching plays a significant
role in language learning and gaining its objectives. So English teacher has to give up traditional
methods and has to adopt innovative methods to teach English language. English
teacher has to play various roles like facilitator, communicator, motivator,
mentor, and guide and build bridge between theory and practice. He should have
minimum idea on pedagogical knowledge which is what teachers know about
teaching their subjects. Pedagogical knowledge such as creating and providing
learning atmosphere, arousing interest, motivating students, enable the use of
technology in teaching, creating positive vibrations towards learning, creating
stress-free environment etc. pedagogical knowledge enriches the teaching
effective.
So the teacher plays a key role to
enable the students good at English language. And the teaching is challenging
to the teacher in modern era. The innovative methods are helpful to face the
challenge, shows how these innovative methods make the teachers efficient and
how these are helpful to students to learn English in effective manner.
The main aim of learning English is
to acquire simple, natural and live English. So the aim of teaching should be
linguistic, practical and language acquisition. The modern trends in English
language teaching helps the students learn faster and in efficient and
interesting manner. It is the teacher responsibility to leave old methods and
follow new methods for the benefit of the students.
Technology
has greatly improved our lives in all aspects over the years. Technology has
made sharing and spreading of information easier and faster. Thanks to
technology, education is now made easier by providing the opportunity of
learning from your home allowing learners to take courses at their own pace. It
has also opened education to learners with learning disabilities and in remote
locations. We have always tried to encourage learners to learn about things
through language. Getting learners to do work about topics that are of interest
to them, or topics that are taught in other parts of the curriculum is a great
way to improve their skills. Technology makes this possible wherever you are in
the world. Teachers and learners can go online to read or listen
to material about different areas of interest, and can then write or speak
about what they have discovered, telling others in the class or other classes
elsewhere in the world.
As we know education is a systematic
and organized process of applying modern technology to improve the quality of
education. It is a systematic way of evaluation of the educational process,
learning and teaching and help with the application of modern educational
teaching techniques. It includes instructional materials, methods and
organization of work and relationships, and the behavior of all participants in
the educational process. Today’s children use modern technical equipment from
an early age, so that their coming in with new educational technologies at
school will not be a problem. In studies, we can find out that more students
use modern technical equipment. Modern
technologies can be an extremely useful resource for teachers and learners of foreign
languages.
Instructors increasingly exploit these pedagogical tools, the real story seems
to be the way students use them to acquire foreign language competency. The
Internet itself has unlocked a world of opportunity for students. Information
and ideas that were previously out of reach are a click away. Students of all
ages can connect, share, and learn on a global scale.
Using computers or other forms of
technology can give students practice on core content and skills while the
teacher can work with others, conduct assessments, or perform other tasks.
Since computers are still not widely used in many schools, the teaching process
is dominated by traditional methods. It is dominated by the frontal form of
work where the teacher had enough interaction with students.
Using technology in the classroom can
allow teachers' to effectively organize and present lessons. Multimedia
presentations can make the material more meaningful and engaging.
Over the past several decades,
studies analyzing the relationship between technology and foreign language
learning have tended to focus on several key issues, including motivation,
reading and writing and research language learning.
Studies indicate that students introduced to these kinds of resources were more
apt to use them independently at a later date. In the same way, there is some
evidence that writing blogs helps students learns independently while also
developing intercultural knowledge and linguistic skills. In this way they not
only improve their writing skill but also obtain understanding of the culture
of the target language. Language teachers should update their skills with
training on the use of technology, including computers, multimedia, and smart
boards in the language-learning classroom.
Instructors should also urge their students to use technology for
language learning; the Internet especially can be fruitful for language
learning.
Watching YouTube videos, using instant messengers, writing e-mails and using
Skype can help students improve all four language skills.
These trends support the larger concept of lifelong learning, especially with
respect to learning foreign languages in or out of the language classroom.
There are various types of technologies currently used in traditional
classrooms.
Students would also agree that technology, in
this case computer, allow for more control over their learning. Some of the
special characteristics that mobile learning presents to its users are
connectivity, speed, and accessibility. With benefits like these, mobile
learning has the ability to offer more to education than has been available
before. With easy access to the Internet, classrooms are more flexible to adapt
to surrounding students who have different needs.
Interactive Whiteboards: An interactive whiteboard that provides touch control
of computer applications. These enhance the experience in the classroom by
showing anything that can be on a computer screen. This not only aids in visual
learning, but it is interactive so the students can draw and write on the
interactive whiteboard.
Educational technology provides
the means to focus on active student participation and to present
differentiated questioning strategies. It broadens individualized instruction
and promotes the development of personalized learning plans in some computer
programs available to teachers. Students are encouraged to use multimedia
components and to incorporate the knowledge they gained in creative ways. This
allows some students to individually progress from using low ordered skills
gained from drill and practice activities, to higher level thinking through
applying concepts creatively and creating simulations. In some cases, the
ability to make educational technology individualized may aid in targeting and
accommodating different learning styles and levels.
There are two categories of teachers in the understanding of educational
technology. Some of them have thorough understanding of modern technical
appliances and their operation while others think it is necessary for them to
gain additional technical knowledge of the appliances and methods, teaching
methods, student-teacher relationship... These two groups represent a group of
teachers between older and younger teachers. Older teachers during their study
did not have the possibility of training with modern technical appliances, did
not have the information technology, educational technology... while the
younger generation of teachers possess the knowledge required for the use of
educational technology.
For a
better understanding of educational technology requires a set of computer
science, pedagogy, psychology, informatics... The knowledge teachers possess is
sufficient for a basic use of education technology. However, educational
technology is one big system. First of all, teachers have a basic knowledge of
the use of educational technology. It takes far more professional training
through a variety of conferences, courses, professional works, seminars... in
order to get a better knowledge in the use of educational technology. Teachers
have to be motivated to use the same because the use of educational technology
in teaching provides better interaction with students, better reception of
information because the students receive knowledge visual, auditory and kinesthetic
way. Among other things, an educational technology motivates students to work
independently where the student is more motivated to return to learning and
working because modern technical equipment is widely available at any given
moment.
The presence of educational
technology is growing in the classroom. The new generation of kids comes ready
to work with these new technologies, which play an important role in children’s
learning and acquiring various cognitive knowledge so that educational technology
must be incorporated into future curricula. The application of educational
technology enhances skills. With the help of new technology comes an explosion
of learning and receiving new information, especially on mobile devices.
Teachers have been using new
technologies in the classroom. However, the development and application of new
technologies grows as a measure that is the question of whether teachers are
trained to keep up with them. Here we have two problems. Are the teachers
having the ability to use educational technology and whether the school is
sufficiently equipped with all modern technical means? Numerous studies were
carried out, some are still ongoing, but we have to find the right strategies
to apply educational technology in teaching. So the English teacher should be
friendly and follow latest trends in English language teaching to teach
effectively. He should be innovative and make the students innovative. English
teacher can develop employability skills and integrated language skills in
students by following modern trends in English language teaching.
