New Application for Android Operating System “SIP telephony”

Nowadays computer equipment market offers the vast majority of mobile devices. It is difficult to imagine a multimedia device that does not play-back video. Research of Android operating system, being the part of the same name platform developed by Google, resulted in the development of new video application titled “SIP telephony” for mobile devices with Android operating system. As you can see from the title, the application is based on simple, but reliable SIP protocol.

This new application incorporates all the advantages of the existing video applications. The main flavor of “SIP telephony” application is that it works both via the Internet and via LAN. Transmission of video via local area network (Wi-Fi) significantly saves budget funds of any organization.

“SIP telephony” software product has already been introduced. It has the following functions: video calls between two users; video conferences; transmission of video, audio, and text messages. It also supports such functions, as selection between front-facing camera and rear-facing camera, switching on/off microphone and message sounds, video quality variation, and user identification.

Video can be broadcasted in on-line and off-line modes. In on-line mode video transmission rate is 60 fps, while in off-line mode it is 15 fps. Video images are transferred in YUV format. Video color intensity is medium, as the server lacks capacity for data processing. Further it is planned to create single server for “SIP telephony” application.

Audio transmission is carried out using 16 bit PCM audio codec integrated to Android operating system. Speech transfer rate is 88 Kbit/s.

In order to avoid network congestion and to provide high-quality transmission of multimedia information, capacity of application is 1 Mbit/s. In the process of field testing of “SIP telephony” application users did not have any complaints; everybody liked work of application and its interface.

Differential peculiarity of this application is that it demonstrates robust performance, while using both with earlier versions of Android, starting from Android 2.3, and with older versions. Soon “SIP telephony” application will be uploaded to Play Market for common use free of charge.
