Microscopic signs of the roots of burdock (Arctium lappa L.)

 

It is known from the folk medicine, that burdock’s root possesses diuretic, sudatory and depurative features, facilitates metabolism regulation on podagra, diabetes mellitus, cholelith and nephrolih, as well as on skin diseases (seborrhea, eczema, lichen, trophic ulcer, abscess). In the medical practice drugs from burdock are used as burdock’s oil and prescribed for alopecia of the scalp.

In connection with the above mentioned anatomy research of burdock’s root is considered to be the actual task as for phyto-medicines design and standardization for treatment and prevention of various types of alopecia.

Microscopy. Powder from unpeeled roots of grey-brown or brown to grey color is revised under microscope using P chloral hydrate solution. The following parts are detected in the powder: peel fragments from 2-3 layers of dark-brown cells (fig.1); fragments of bark parenchyma (fig.2), central cylinder (fig.3) which consists from the round cells with thin membranes; fragments of core ray parenchyma with lengthened cells with thin membranes (fig.4); single secretory cells with brownish content (fig.5); bast fiber groups (fig.6) and central cylinder fibers (fig.7) with thickened membranes and wide cavities; groups of ladder-shaped vessels with the adjacent parenchyma (fig.8); groups of spiral vessels with adjacent fibers (fig.9); fragments of spiral segments (fig.10), ladder-shaped (fig.11) or ladder-cellular (fig.12) vessels, parenchyma cells with inuline.

Based on the literature review and analysis of raw material, we have created chapter “Identification. Microscopy” of the project of Analytical normative documentation for the roots of burdock (Arctium lappa L.) (medicinal herbs).
