ARTISTIC INTENSIONS OF ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE NOVEL “NATURE” BY OLGA KOBYLIANSKA

Actuality of work is conditioned by the urgent necessity of more complete exposure and all-round study of the of translating transformations used for the achievement of adequacy of transmission of maintenance and form of artistic work, also by the necessity of research of specific of including of Ukrainian-language works for the context of translations of outer literary space.

The objective of the research is to determine the degree of translation adequacy of novel  “Nature” by Olga Kobylianska, that was performed by Lesia Budna, in particular the analysis of literary transformations, means of issuance of information and expression in the English text of the work.

The object of study is novel “Nature” by Olga Kobylianska. The subject is lexical-semantic, morphological and syntactic levels of English translation of novel “Nature” by Olga Kobylianska.

The theoretical-methodological basis of work is presented by scientific works of Iryna Аlekseeva, Leonid Barhudarov, Volodymyr Rjptilov, Vilen Komisarov, Lev Latyshev, Yakiv Retsker and others.

The correct understanding of basic units of translation of terminological vehicle is needed in the context of our research. In particular, such as translation and its varieties, of translating transformation.

Translation transference of text is traditionally considered from one language on other. Translation is the special method of cross-cultural communication, that the certain system of verbal forms, that carry in itself sense and values expressed by facilities of one language(languages of original) and recoded in other(language of translation) by various transformations, is the basis of.

Researchers distinguish the different types of translation. In particular, on the method of communication, on the level of equivalence of text of original and him of translating variant, on the sphere of functioning. In the context of the carried out research we are most interested by artistic translation. Exactly artistic translation uses Lesia Budna in the process of recoding of Ukrainian original text of short story of Оlga Kobylianska “Nature” into English. From the point of view of translating terminology correctly will name text of original an invariant, id est by an unchanging variant, and text of translation – by a variant. In our case, it is the English-language variant.

Its analysis testifies to the frequent address of Lesia Budna to translating transformations, id est changes of formal or semantic components of original text at maintenance of the information intended for a transmission.

There are different types of translating transformations. In the research we leaned against classification of translating transformations of Yakiv Retsker, Lion Latyshev and Roksolana Zorivchak. Thus, of translating transformations of Lesia Budna conditionally can be distributed on lexico-semantic and syntactic.

A translator is succeeded to such transformations, as transpositions, additions, prolapsuses and replacements, in particular transcription, hyperonimy and hyponymy (or generalisation and specification), descriptive periphrasis, interlingual connotative transposition, assimilation and others.

Transcription, or a transliteration, id est exact transmission of sounding of foreign word graphemes of accepting language, Lesia Budna uses, for example, for translation of such words as “цісар”, “гуцул”, “пан”, “побережник”, “полонина”.

A translator uses the hyperonimyical redesignating also, or generalisation, id est by replacement of unit of source language that has more narrow value, by unit of language of translation with more wide value. For example, “великий пан” – “top pan”, instead of “most mister”.

Lesia Budna is succeeded to the descriptive periphrasis, id est the use of descriptive turn is for the recreation of realities of original: “праліс” is translated as “dense forest”.

We may find also counter-drawing cases – recreations of method of stranger word-formation or structure of word-combination in the language of translation. For example, expression “сільські дівчата” is translated as “village girls”.

For translation of idioms Lesia Budna uses the means of interlingual connotative transposition, that consists in replacement of reality, that in text of original functions not so much in denotative(direct), but in a connotative (portable, vivid, associative) value, often, by reality that performs the similar duty in the language of translation. In the last example a translator resorted to the prolapsus.

Mostly Lesia Budna has assimilation – recreation of semantically-stylistic functions of reality of language-source the used variety of translation transformations by a foreign analogue – reality of language of reseptioner. Often this means become in case during translation of dialecticisms.

At the level of syntax, an author is succeeded to such translation transformations, as changes in segmentation of sentences, indentions, in particular during translation of indirect language.

Thus, realizable research allowed to us to come to such conclusions. Comparative analysis of original text of the Ukrainian short story of Оlga Kobylianska “Nature” and its English-language accordance allowed to educe basic principles of translating strategy of Lesia Budna. Translator applies the row of translating transformations, which violate formal similarity of translation of original, but provide the achievement of higher level of equivalence, fully legitimately. Mostly used in translation of short story “Nature” is facilities of transposition, addition, prolapsus, replacement, in particular transcription, transliteration, counter-drawing, assimilation, interlingual connotative transposition, hyperonimical redesignating, descriptive periphrasis. Investigated translation keeps a main idea, a mood and spirit of the vivid system of work pass, a national colour recreates him. The Artistic intensions of the investigated text give sufficient grounds to assert the high level of translating mastery of Lesia Budna.
