THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF NATIONAL
SCIENTIFIC AGRICULTURAL LIBRARY OF NATIONAL ACADEMY OF AGRARIAN SCIENCE IN
UKRAINE
National Scientific
Agricultural Library of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine –
the leading specialized library of national importance; branch library-depository,
research and information center on the formation of industry segments of
agrarian issues as part of the information space of Ukraine, its
document-information potential represents over million print units on 32 languages
59 countries. The library was founded in 1917 at the General Secretariat of the
Land Affairs of the Ukrainian Central Rada, its funds
amounted to 1007 units [4].
After organization the
Agricultural Scientific Committee of Ukraine, which was subordinate People's
Commissariat of Land Affairs, it got the status of Central library. The first
decade of its activities coincided with the times of new economic policy and
collectivization, aimed on adapting of activities to existing state system. The
staff of the library distributed agronomic knowledge among farmers, provided
methodological assistance to scientists and librarians of the sector research
institutes and stations in solving the tasks on base of distribution of books
and bibliographic information [7].
In 1959 the library came
in the structure of Ukrainian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, its found consisted of 300 000 printed units on all
aspects of agriculture of Ukraine. The library was serving the research
institutions and agricultural universities of the USSR. It contributed to the
study and promotion of science and best practices in the USSR and abroad, gave
the summary and bibliographical collections, organized book exhibitions. In
1970 the library subordinated Southern Department of Union Academy of
Agricultural Science named after Lenin. It has become a scientific center for
the network of the libraries of the agricultural research institutes, experimental
stations and educational universities of Ukraine and Moldova [1].
The new period of the
library history began in 1998, it received the status of a research institute
of the first category. From 2000 it began implementing in production activities
information technology, started creating own electronic resource "UkrAhroteka." Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on
October 29, 2003 declared that it is a library of national importance, which
serves as a research and methodical center of agricultural industry. In
December library has received national status for significant contribution to
the development of agriculture, library science and national history of science
and technology. At the
beginning of the XXI century National Scientific Agricultural Library of the National
Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine carried
out the information
providing of scientific support of agricultural development. The
main purpose of the library at this stage – to ensure every citizen of Ukraine
free access to national and global information resources on agriculture and
forestry issues. Library has involved in the representation of information and
library branch activities at the international level, promoted the best gain on
the area Agricultural Sciences [5].
The library has developed
a "Concept of information of the libraries in Ukraine", it approved Committees
of the Verkhovna Rada of
Ukraine, and "Concept of Information of the Agricultural Libraries of
Ukraine", adopted by Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine and National Academy
of Agricultural Sciences of Ukraine; about 100 regulatory documents for 210
libraries of the branch research institutes and educational institutions, which
were systematically subordinate.
The its main tasks today: collection and preservation of book funds; formation
of a national industry information content; free
access to all categories of users to the domestic and international information
and library resources; scientific and
documentary support of agricultural science and production; providing professional information and library services
(local access, e-service, etc.); publishing; coordination of the network
of the agricultural libraries of Ukraine;
training the scientific staff through postgraduate and doctoral on historical disciplines
(including training foreign citizens); retraining and advanced training of library staff;
integration of national industry
information in the global information
space [2, 3].
The Library publishes 13 bibliographic series, namely
"Academicians of National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine",
"Bibliography of agrarian scientists of Ukraine", "Agrarian
Sciences of Ukraine in the persons, documents, bibliography,"
"Scientific historical and bibliographic reading", "Scientific and
subsidiary retrospective bibliographic, Bibliographic indexes",
"Famous scientists, naturalists and educators of Ukraine", "Corresponding
Member of National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine ","Land
management science","Academicians and Corresponding
members of NAS of Ukraine for agriculture", "Foreign
member of the National Academy of agrarian Sciences of Ukraine" and others [4].
Institute of
History of Agricultural Science, Education and
Technology that was organizated at NSAL on base of the results of the research
consistently supports realization of the program perpetuation of prominent figures of scientists and
institutions that glorify Ukraine in the world.
To this end,
the Institute conducts conferences, scientific readings, round tables, representations
in the media
and the opening
of nominal plaques, signs and more.
In order disclosure of historical research Institute
launched the scientific digest – electronic interdepartmental thematic
scientific collection "History of Science and Biographical Studies" in
2006 (access mode: http://inb.dnsgb.com.ua/). That corresponds somewhat basic library functions in
respect information and library support scientific support agricultural
production.
National Scientific Agricultural Library – scientific
center for 210 libraries of agricultural profile in Ukraine, namely libraries of research institutions, research
stations, universities of the I-IV accreditation levels. For network librarians
it organizes seminars, conferences, training, develop instructional regulatory
documents, training materials, and provided practical advice. All these
materials are published through the issue of "Bulletin of National
Scientific Agricultural Library of NAAS" [2].
The library maintains contact with diplomatic
representatives of foreign countries and international organizations, including
Lithuania, Poland, Israel, France, Germany, Slovakia and Hungary. The basis of
the relationship is the representation of common cultural values in the form of
books, scientific events, presentations, roundtables and more. It cooperates
with foreign institutions – "Belarusian Agricultural Library named after I. Lupinovych" of NAS in Belarusian, Central Agricultural
Library of Poland (Warsaw), Cabolch-Satmar-Berezhska Regional
Organization of the Association of Hungarian Librarians, Committee and City
Library named after Moritz Zsigmond (Nyiregyhaza,
Hungary), Library of Natural Sciences University (Lublin). The library
maintains close relations with scientific and educational institutions,
including the State University of Agriculture in Warsaw, Warsaw University of
Economics, University in Zagreb, Faculty of Agriculture (Croatia), Czech
University (Prague), Central Library of the University of Agricultural Sciences,
Veterinary Medicine (Cluj-Napoca, Romania) [4].
Important role in the activities of the library covers
cooperation with universities of agricultural profile in Ukraine, to conduct
joint historical research through the creation of Centers of Science History. In
particular, the library cooperates with Pereyaslav-Khmelnitsky
Pedagogical University named after Gregory Skovoroda,
Poltava State Agricultural Academy, National University of Water and
Environment, Uman National University of Horticulture
Education of Ukraine, Zhytomyr National Agroecological University and others. The library also collaborates
with the National Pedagogical University named after M. Dragomanov and National Agriculture University of Ukraine
for the joint publication of the digest "Journal of Agricultural History";
Hlukhiv National Pedagogical University named after
O. Dovzhenko for edition of the book
"Historical studies of social progress". Every
year the library holds scientific conference of young scientists and
specialists "History of Education, Science and Technology of
Ukraine", scientific reading, scientific workshops
[4].
Thus, the history of the
library – a natural evolutionary path forward full academic research
institution in terms of European integration processes with its real democratic
values. The its
main tasks: formation of a national industry information content; free access
to all categories of users to the domestic and international information and
library resources; scientific and documentary support of agricultural science
and production; publishing; coordination of the network of the agricultural libraries of Ukraine; retraining and advanced training of library
