Plants  and animals in professional ethics

At all departments of economics and business alongside with the cycle of theoretical and  practical courses in  economy the discipline “professional ethics” (there are some adjoining courses−“business relations”, “ psychology of professional relations”, “imagiology”, “professional etiquette” etc.) belongs to the leading position in economic education. Professional resources, their quality and level, play a significant role in shaping economy. Good economic  theories may fail against a poor professional background realized through manpower. From this point two paths of consideration begin. The first one concerns the quality of economic knowledge of specialists, the level of professional education and its relation to practice, work and economic jobs. The second path is connected with human nature that under the influence of social development becomes more and more complicated. The problems of matching specialists are very numerous. Professional success demands harmony in relations that is sometimes difficult to be achieved. It is just because of this reason that the discipline “professional ethics” is much demanded. It is not enough for a contemporary specialist to have only good knowledge of a job. Human traits have a great responsibility to promote professional knowledge. In what professional  situations do specialists have more moral problems? How to make up the margin between the universal moral issues of good will and specific professional situations? These questions are the content core of the discipline “professional ethics”. The traditional topics of the discipline “professional ethics” are: full professional self-realization, professional image and speech etiquette, organization of business events, professional written speech and documents, telephone conversation, traits of a good leader, team work, overcoming professional conflicts. All these problems are aimed at lessening tension of human psychic, because today’s working conditions are very complicated: a big amount of very minor details in professional responsibilities, very often to make a decision on the spot is demanded−professional potential must be very flexible and adaptive to difficult situations. Traditionally the discipline “professional ethics” tries to decide the above situations at the expense either of pure moral (professional ethics) or digging in human psychic (psychology of professional relations). But being part of nature a man can’t be regarded in isolation to natural surroundings. Today’s working offices are overloaded with technologies and computer ones, first of all. This  sphere is of high technological level, but it is artificial and it is one of the sources of all problems in the related situations that are tried to be decided at the expense of pure moral or pure human psychic, detached from nature.

In  this article the author proposes a new course−“plants and animals in professional ethics”. Personal experience and some professional witnesses have preceded these  theoretical  considerations. Really, potted plants create a favorable ecological atmosphere in an office. The more so as contemporary botanic science and floristic studies have gathered much information in this respect. The life of a plant has invisible ties with a human organism [6]. Plants influence on mood and health of men. Scientists research the biological possibilities in the length of a human life−how to prolong human life; they consider that it is connected with genes. Experiences of such gene search are aimed at studying plants’ life (the author of the article has got a brief information about it in English and Japanese research). There is a young science−aromatherapy. The unity of a man and plant is realized better than a man does something with a plant or for a plant. If one has a favorite flower or plant before one’s eyes he or she will be psychologically more favorable for a professional task: plants charge people with positive energy. Some enterprises have either corridors of internal small gardens or rooms. These are best places of relaxation and getting rid of negative lefts-over of professional relations. In fairy tales of traditional culture of various peoples men often speak with plants, flowers and trees.

The “flora” part of the proposed course should have such topics: botanic qualities of plants and flowers, which may do well for human professional relations; cultural potential of plants and flowers; advice how to cultivate plants in your office; basics of floristic; plants and human health. One very important point to be taken into consideration: the content of the course is sure to depend on the nature zone where an enterprise is situated.

The second stage of nature intrusion into professional offices is application of contacts with animals. Animal intellect is a very romantic science nowadays. A man tries to make communication with animals, nowadays by technological means−decoding devices (Japanese experience). Bionics researches the application of animal intellect, perfect traits of animal organism in human activity [4]. But let’s come closer to our everyday life. To my mind many people came across such a situation in life. For example, a teacher is having a problem with discipline in the classroom. There is a chaos in the classroom. Suddenly a mewing cat peeps into the classroom and everybody  stares at it. The cat attracts the attention of all. The animal changes the situation and succeeds to do what the teacher hasn’t done for hours! One more example. There are several employees in an office room. The relations among them are cool and tense, they seldom talk with each other. Of course, it is difficult to fulfil one’s task in such an alienate atmosphere. Suddenly, one of the collegues brings a pet ( there was nobody to leave it with at home)−it is a small puppy. And don’t’ be surprised: everybody tries to speak with it, the puppy immediately becomes the focus of attention. The small psychological effects, mentioned, may lead us to a fruitful strategy; to introduce pets into professional sphere [5]. These may be cats, kittens, puppes, small  decorative dogs, birds, even tiny fishes in an aquarium. Of course one mustn’t gather then all in one room. How can this question be decided? If nobody opposes the chosen pet may be brought to the office room where the group sits. If employees have different pets then there may be a special room where the animals are kept in case their keeper is busy. A special person may be appointed who would care for the animals, while their owners have no time to care. Besides the psychic influence, animals may establish good ties and relations with human health. Animal therapy is a young  science and it has reported about many successful results. For example, scientists have discovered that a cat usually chooses a place on a human body that is sick in some way, that is, cats help to discover diseases! There are some people  who love animals but they have neither skills nor habits to keep them And if they come to work and have some opportunity to play or spend some time with a tamed animal it would give them a piece of positive energy and they will not regret that they can’t keep a pet themselves[1,3].

So  the second  part of the proposed course ” plants and animals in professional ethics” should include such topics: life cycle of most popular pets; how to understand animals’ habits; do animals have a language? how animals can treat human diseases; basic advice to train and tame animals (predominantly cats, dogs, birds0); what to do if your pet is ill?[2].

To conclude my considerations how to fill in some gaps in professional ethics I would make such a statement: contemporary education (economic education in this article) needs a new course “Plants and animals in professional ethics” which is to bring social professional sphere closer to nature and that will refresh  and give psychological energy to working people. This is a good background to give productive professional results. A man can’t become ideal in moral being detached from nature. The words by Leonardo da Vinchi will finish the article: “There are many reasons in nature that men haven’t got in their experience”.
