10 tips how to improve your English

Learning English doesn’t always have to mean sitting in the classroom and studying grammar. There are many ways to improve your understanding of the language, many of which can actually be a lot of fun. Different people respond to different learning methods. Sometimes reading a book or studying in the classroom is not for you. Another additional work can be beneficial for your day-to-day learning language.

If you want to improve your English (or any other second language for that matter) then consider some of these handy tips to help you in studying. Some of this ideas can certainly be helpful.

1.Watch video blogs on any topics you are interested in: make-up, healthy lifestyle, fitness, yoga and others. Listen to videos attentively, how native speakers talk, what do they show and do. You can also listen to English radio stations or films and TV programs and find plenty of listening sources on the internet. You’ll learn English more quickly.

2. If you decide to learn a new word, then learn it in the context. Repeat it few times a day and it will be easily to memorize its meaning. When you learn a new word, try to memorize a couple of sentences that contain it. There might come a time when you can use one particular sentence with little, or no alteration at all. Unfortunately, many people learn words by heart, but have no idea how to use them in a sentence.

3.Change the language on your smartphone or computer. This can actually be a good way of learning an additional language. If you turn your Facebook and smartphone settings to ‘English’ then you can continue to learn the language while you’re communicating with friends. Another idea with your device is to download the bilingual dictionary. A bilingual dictionary is your best friend while you’re learning English. You saw or thought something or came across an idea, check it in the dictionary. One word or phrase and you’ll remember it because you’ll have associations with that situation.

4. If you have an opportunity to watch or communicate with the native speakers do all your best. Listen to their accent, intonation, their manner of speaking and watch their gestures. When speaking in a foreign language, you might be so focused on what you are saying and whether it’s correct or not, that you forget to listen to what others are saying. This is a big mistake as they might be using the exact words or grammar you’ll be needing later on. So pay attention to what’s being said around you, it’s your most important resource at the time of speaking to someone.

5. Label things in your house, because this is a quick and cheap way to improve your vocabulary of everyday items in your house. Just buy a pack of labels and write the names of items in your home. Every time you use these objects you’ll read the word and embed it into your memory. This is great for beginner learners.

6. Read or watch the news in English. Being informed of what is happening in the world is a great habit. But do it in English. Start watching BBC, CNN and it will also build your listening skills, your vocabulary. So if you buy a newspaper or watch news, make sure you do it in English.

7. Listen to English music and learn the lyrics. If you enjoy the music just download the lyrics. Once you have it in front of you listen to the music and sing along. It ‘ll also help you to get those words out of your mouth. Automatically English words will pour out of your mouth. So start listening to foreign music.

8. Maintain a book. If you start doing this, it will help you to write better. Every night write at least 5 sentences of what you did the whole day. For example, events or what just happened with you or you can write a small story. Also, you can add new word, phrases you have learned.  When you want to refer you can have a quick look and in this way you’ll build your English well.

9. Read children’s books and watch children’s cartoons. Don’t be embarrassed about doing that. The language that is used in this books is for children, that’s why the words are simple to understand. If you start reading these books it will help you to understand the language well. There are a lot of illustrations and pictures in such books, so you’ll know what is written about. Same applies when you watch the cartoons. Simple language is used on constant basis. This way you’ll build your vocabulary and listening skills and eventually you’ll have many new words for yourself.

10. Don’t be strict for yourself. If you made a mistake in some grammar construction, it’s OK, your language will be improved eventually. You cannot expect to just turn up to class for a few weeks and be able to speak the language. You must engage in lots of work outside of class and use your brain as much as possible.
