Using Search Engines in Self-learning

Today the Internet is an integral part of our lives. It is used by more than 300 million people daily. One of the positive aspects of the Internet is that it is the most extensive library in the world.

There exist a lot of specific search engines that can be used to find information quickly on almost any topic. We can visit a virtual museum, read encyclopedias, use online translators and dictionaries, listen to music, watch videos and live broadcasts from Web cameras, read fiction and non-fiction, etc. Our parents could not even dream of such an extraordinary opportunity for self-development.

To use the search engine, you need to enter the web-site of this system on the Internet and use key words or phrases to search for the semantic field of the required information. The system will give as a result a lot of links which will contain the key words and phrases [1].

We can access information from different sources. Let us consider the elements of this tool, and describe their functionality. As a rule, all the elements are standard in the technical implementation of web-based applications and email programs.

1. Mailbox

Let's start with e-mails. We can find the Internet resource and subscribe the information that is constantly updates, the so-called newsletters. Deliveries can be made out of any site or from a special thematic feed. We can subscribe these newsletters in the form of e-mails to our inbox, and then check them periodically to get the necessary information (technology and innovation news, academic news, economic news, news about grants, competitions, tenders exhibitions, conferences, workshops, etc.).

2. Really Simple Syndication (RSS), a standardized system for the distribution of content from an online publisher to Internet users

RSS is a standardized system for the distribution of content from an online publisher to Internet users. It is a technology that allows the users to update information without visiting the website regularly, and the owners of the web-resources to inform the users quickly about updating the content of their sites.

Use of the term "syndication" in the sense of "dissemination / information" goes back to the tradition of sending material for publication / broadcast in several publications, radio stations and television channels.

Another way to make website material available to multiple other sites is web syndication. Usually web syndication refers to making web feeds available from a site in order to provide other people with update of the website's recently added content. It can be the latest news or forum posts.

For information about updates to web-sites and the latest technology with the RSS, the user needs to subscribe to the RSS-feed of these sites. To subscribe to feeds, you need to visit a text link or icon RSS, go to this link and click on the "Subscribe" button.

The special program is necessary to read a tape (RSS-aggregator, aggregator RSS, RSS-reader, a reader RSS, feed readers, etc.), which periodically checks the web-sites which support RSS, and extracts the updated records.

3. Search Engines

Another common tool to obtain information is a research engine.

The most popular search engines in Ukraine are Google − 53.1%, Yandex − 31.5%, Mail.ru Search − 7.3%, Ukr.net Search − 1.0%, Rambler − 0.6% and the others 6.5% [2].

4. YouTube. Video Lessons

A few words should be said about the meaning of YouTube service.

YouTube is a video-sharing website, created in February 2005. Users can upload, view and share videos here. The company is based in California, and uses Adobe Flash Video and HTML5 technology to display a wide variety of user-generated video content. The content includes movie and TV clips, and music videos, as well as amateur content such as video blogging, short original educational and, videos.

Most of the YouTube videos are uploaded by individuals. Registered users can upload an unlimited number of them.

The users can also leave their comment. Due to the simplicity and ease of use, YouTube service has become the most popular video hosting site and the third in the world in the number of visitors. The number of daily video views on the site is more than 3 billion. The site contains professionally shot movies and clips and amateur videos. There are also many different video tutorials, which help to create useful information environment for self-education [3].

So, self-learning is a complex process but it becomes much easier faster and more enjoyable with the help of search engines.
