Editors’ Professional Competence Basing on Mykola Lukash’s Translation Activities
Mykola Lukash’s translation activities is
considered to be unique phenomenon in the history of Ukrainian arts. Both
substential understanding of the demands to belles-lettres translation and
those processes which were taking place in the culture in general and Ukrainian
culture in particular were synthesized in his activities.
Mykola Lukash’s translation conception is
directed to provide the integrity of Ukrainian cultural polysystem and adequate
functioning of Ukrainian as well as
inseparable from editor’s and psycological-and-pedagogical activities.
Researchers state that one of the most valuable
features of M. Lukash’s translations is universalism revealing in the
variety of languages and genres of the texts chosen for translation, diversity
of their styles, literary trends, lexical diversity [2], editor’s and
psycological-and-pedagogical feeling. Researchers-linguists
define the facts those should be considered by future editors.
Namely, in modern Ukrainian linguistic studios
the growth of attention to the
historical sources of literary language vocabulary formation, to specifying its
relations with cultural-and-written tradition, its territorial diversity of
literary-lingual process from the end of XVIII-th – to the beginning of the XX-th c. are clearly outlined [1; 6-8].
By recognition of M. Lukash’s
contemporaries, he was not only translator, author, literary critic but dedicated
lexicographer, i.e. editor.
During all his conscious life he worked out the
card index of Ukrainian vocabulary and phraseology, keeping in mind to make new
thesaurus of Ukrainian language of the XX-th. c., that could outperform the
dictionaries had been made by Borys Hrynchenko and Ahatanhel Kryms’kyy [6].
M. Lukash’s translations are used in the illustrative part of
“Ukrainian Language Dictionary”, even in that small number of dictionary
entries and only in the first three volumes of the Dictionary, enable to reveal
deep and organic connections of Lukash’s language with the ancient Ukrainian
texts, with the creative works of the writers of the XIX-th c., which created
the foundation for new literary language.
M. Lukash paid special attention to the personality of
P. Kulish and activated in his translations the usage of the words which
in the Dictionary by Hrynchenko given with the reference to the texts by
P. Kulish.
In his lexical choice M. Lukash based on
the thorough knowledge of literary and spoken language.
By his translation activities he developed and enlarged stylistic
peculiarities of dialect, archaic and rearly used words both from eastern and
western Ukrainian sources [5].
M. Lukash perfectly mastered deep layers
of Ukrainian phraseology, gave priority to full and partial equivalents transforming
the last for conveying the meaning of the original texts.
M. Lukash’s linguistic innovation is the
logical continuation of lingua-stylistic searches of his predecessors and
specifies continuity of the development of Ukrainian artistic translation. Delicate
perception of the text rhythm and melody, its euphonic formation is the
specified factor for M. Lukash during translations of poetical works [4].
The researchers define that in M. Lukash’s
translations the elements of versifications are brightly expressed as those which
don’t break genre-stylistic peculiarities of the original. Their
implementation to the translation structure is not caused by the lack of
extralinguistic knowledge but conscious active search of new expressive
possibilities of Ukrainian that is explained by the action of the whole scope
social-and-cultural factors.
We shall note that in M. Lukash’s editing and translation practice
there are a lot of examples those are characteristic for creative activity of a
number of translators and that gives grounds to be spoken as standard ones in
the audience of future editors.
However, during the formation of future editors’ professional competence
it is necessary to pay students’ attention to the individual new works those
are the important peculiarity of M. Lukash poetics. Their intensive usage
is the source of figurativeness, artistic expression, expressivity of his translation texts. Quantitative
correlation between the new words of the original and translation proves
conclusively in favour of the last [3].
