Translation peculiarities of Noam Chomsky's discourse (based on Chomsky’s articles)

Peter Newmark, an English professor of translation at the University of Surrey [3], mentions the difference between translation methods and translation procedures. While translation methods relate to whole texts, translation procedures are used for sentences and the smaller units of language. He went on to refer to the following methods of translation: word-for-word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, semantic translation, adaptation, free translation, idiomatic translation, communicative translation [4].

For this article I have examined Noam Chomsky’s article (2013) and an interview with him (1976). It was enough to collect more than 100 units, which were combined into such thematic subgroups as: society-related terms, economy-related terms, policy-related terms, terms on forms of social organization, state-related terms, abstract political terms, ideology-related terms.

According to the proposed methods I have translated all lexical units:

1. Word for word translation: free society – вільне суспільство; voluntary socialism – добровільний соціалізм; representative democracy – представницька демократія; Israeli kibbutzim – ізраїльський кібуц; self-management – самоуправління; pre-industrial society – доіндустріальне суспільство; centralized authoritarian state – централізована авторитарна держава; individual freedom – особиста свобода; a representative body – представницький орган; direct activity – пряма дія; self-governance – самоуправління; state employee – державний працівник, чиновник; public interest – народний інтереси; libertarian society – лібертарне суспільство; highly sophisticated, highly urban industrial society – високорозвинене та урбанізоване індустріальне суспільство; human producer – людина-виробник; class society – класове суспільство; self-enrichment – самозбагачення; a direct representative – пряме представництво; complex industrial society – складне індустріальне суспільство; industrial capitalism – індустріальний капіталізм; economic empire – економічна імперія; totalitarian state – тоталітарна держава; stagnation, decline of capitalist institution – стагнація та занепад інституту капіталізму; state totalitarianism – державний тоталітаризм; economic concentration – концентрація економіки; personal liberation – особиства свобода, свобода людини; social liberation – соціальне визволення; the state bureaucracy – державна бюрократія; state intervention – втручання держави; industrial democracy – індустріальна демократія; a means of production – засіб виробництва; truncated democracy – спрощена демократія; state policy – державна політика; financial crisis – фінансова криза; integration of agriculture – інтеграція сільського господарства; coercive bureaucracy – примусова бюрократія, обовязкова бюрократія; workers’ council – рада робітників; workers’ councils and federations – робітничі ради та федерації; worker control – робітничий контроль.

2. Literal translation: a highly organized form of society – високоорганізована форма суспільного ладу; federal arrangement – федеративна організація суспільного життя; monopoly of power – монополія на владу; cooperative society – суспільство з кооперативною (співробітницькою) формою організації; private power – приватна власніть; state power – державна власність; a pre-industrial phase of human society – доіндустріальний період суспільного життя людства; immediate affair – пряма дія; delegation of authority – делегація повноважень; an organic community – органічне суспільство, суспільство взаємодії; a voluntary organization – ініціативна група; irrational society – ірраціональне суспільство, суспільство, яке нераціонально використовує ресурси; health of the economy – здорова економіка; business interest – інтерес прибуткової справи; dominant class interests – інтерес панівного класу; exchange, propaganda campaign – кампанія пропаганди; production of waste – виробництво заради марнотрацтва, споживацьке виробництво; a standard of living – середньостатистичний рівень життя; pride in work – почуття гордості за роботу; the public will – народне волевиявлення; international spectrum – міжнародний чинник; tax breaks – зниження податків; corporate-funded lobby – фінансоване лобіювання корпоративних інтересів; council system – система місцевих рад; council assembly – збори у місцевій раді; co-determination – спільне рішення.

3. Faithful translation: procrustean bed – прокрустове ложе (мірка, формальний шаблон, під які штучно підганяють реальне життя); Keynesian mechanism – кейнсіанський механізм (складова економічної школи кейнсіанства, у якій першорядну роль відіграють макроекономічні звязки); «too-big-to-fail» government insurance policy – страхова політика уряду «надто важливий, щоб втратити»; «systemic risk» – постійний ризик (ризик краху всієї системи).

I have analyzed 102 political terms, received from Noam Chomsky’s article and interview. Having thoroughly studied the nature of the terms, I have noticed the difference in the distribution among the chosen subgroups. In the table below is calculated the per cent part of each block of the terms.

As we can see, Noam Chomsky uses the most frequently terms, that are not directly connected to the political system, party etc. He uses abstract terms, that solely are not associated with politics, thus in the particular context these terms are the best version to reflect a political process, phenomenon etc.

In the table below is calculated also the per cent part of each translation type usage in the article.

Judging from the table above we may also conclude that the word for word translation type is the most applicable in translation of different terms out of their immediate context.

To make a conclusion, due to some American (Chomsky is an American scientist) specifications there are some terms, that wouldn’t be used in terms of Ukrainian politics at all or would be used extremely rarely. Thus the big part of terms from this article may be applied in English-Ukrainian or Ukrainian-English political discourses.
