Why do we study English?

Today, when English is one of the dominating world languages, it isn't so easy to present that it has happened recently and that, for example, at the time of Shakespeare some million people spoke English and other people of the world didn't consider this language necessary knowledge at all.

English has received the status of world language thanks to the fact that it became native for many countries on all continents of the world. It had been begun "to export" in the 17th century, and first of all, to the countries of North America. Therefore the modern importance it is obliged by the, first of all, to the unknown growth of the population in this region which was promoted, in turn, by big influx of immigrants in 19-20 centuries.

The people who know English can be divided into three groups: native speakers for which it is native; the bilinguals knowing it as the second language; and also those people who have to use it for practical purposes (during study or work). Every seventh inhabitant of the Earth is from one of these three categories. Incredibly, but fact: English is also language of 75% of all correspondence and 60% of phone calls.

The knowledge of several languages always expanded communication and integration abilities of the countries and the people. Multilingualism in modern Europe is the standard norm. The linguistic wealth attracts strong social and psychological effect of "open thinking". The citizens, who are fluent in several languages, will be competitive persons both within the country, and abroad. The learning of foreign languages is recognized socially significant as pledge of ensuring practical and professional activity of the person in modern multi lingual and the multicultural world.

English becomes the first world universal language. It is the native language of 500 million people in 12 countries of the world. It is much less, than about about 900 million speaking on Mandarin adverb of Chinese.

But 600 million else speak English as the second language. And some more hundreds of millions have certain knowledge of English which has the official or semi-official status approximately in 68 countries. Though as many people may be speaking various dialects of Chinese as well as English-speaking, English, undoubtedly, is more widespread geographically, really more universal, than Chinese. And its use grows at surprising rates.

Today in the world there are about 1,5 billion people speak English. The English which is the most taught language doesn't replace other languages, and supplements them.

The foreign language skills are an obligatory component of vocational training of the modern expert of any profile. As the experience shows, now teachers are compelled to consider insufficient level of knowledge and abilities of many graduates of high schools of the town and rural schools. Kazakhstan, having headed for mastering his citizens three languages, proceeds from today's realities: the trinity of languages will be the testimony of competitiveness of the country, the President of our country N. A. Nazarbayev speaks about it in his messages from 2006 to 2017.

So for what we need to learn English?

The foreign language is necessary, first of all, for successful career development. Practically each large company has in an asset of communication with foreign firms. Also quite often activity is tightly started on numerous foreign partners - and it isn't surprising, taking into account that, how strongly our economy was integrated into world. The best indicator is the world crisis. If still there was "Iron Curtain", then any crisis hasn't concerned us.

For these reasons for the employer to catch now in ranks of employees of the person who is well knowing English is just the dream of "silver plate". Such person can be much more useful to firm, than the whole department of office employees who well understand the Microsoft Word program and a solitaire "Kosynka". Now employers get rid of similar intensively, according to them, office ballast, and at the same time try to discover the real experts with knowledge of foreign languages constantly. Situation in labor market is difficult. But the clever person with knowledge of English will be able to use such situation in the country and to become a winning party, and not to remain in ranks the unnecessary office employees.It is possible to benefit by each situation – it is necessary to understand only that it is required in labor market and that you can offer. It is enough to you to learn English, and chances not only to remain at work, but also to receive more highly paid position become more than real. The enterprises in the next several months will shake from themselves unnecessary office workers of the most various rank, and on their places will recruit really clever and knowing experts.

English language learning also opens doors to understanding of the computers' world. Now less specialties which didn't demand the minimum skills of work with the personal computer remain, and highly paid work without good knowledge of the computer can't already almost be found. A large number of computer programs are available today only in English therefore if you make plans about employment, somehow connected with computer technologies, then English language learning is just necessary for you.

When you master English, you will have an access to almost unlimited resources for training and self-improvement. You will be able to obtain information on any topic interesting you and also to discuss it with other people. Books, newspapers, magazines — all these offer improbable amount of useful material for training, but the majority of these valuable resources is issued only in English. Also there will be an opportunity to understand favourite music and to watch movies in original language. Original language is always clear, than translated one which loses the initial meaning.

It is possible to communicate directly with foreigners knowing English, to learn their culture and traditions.Also it is possible to go abroad, without fear to remain unclear. If you are lost in the unfamiliar city it will be possible to ask easily where you are. Going abroad, we see boundless opportunities of mankind and beauty of our planet. And it does our life brighter and saturated.

Now there are many opportunities of studying English for students. It is possible to learn English at our Kostanay state university. There is a department of foreign philology where the qualified teachers work. Last year at this department experts from the USA taught. Also, at our university, there is a department of foreign languages where language courses of English, German and the Kazakh languages are conducted. Today at our department, more than 100 people, 9 groups study at language courses of English. Language courses for schoolchildren, students and teachers are planned. The advertising leaflet is already developed and announcements at high schools are placed.

Also, there is an opportunity to learn English in other organizations. For example, in Kostanay regional universal scientific library named after L. Tolstoy, there is the American corner where it is possible to learn English language and to improve skills of colloquial English. The purpose of activity of the American corner is the organization of cross-cultural exchange for strengthening of mutual understanding between the people of Kazakhstan and the United States in the territory of Kostanay region. Also, there are such programs as Work and Travel and a mandrel of students abroad on mobility. As for Kazakhstan, annually more than 3000 students take part in this program. The program is implemented with assistance of the U.S. Department of State. All participants for stay in the USA receive the status of "Exchange Visitor" and the official work permit.

I like one proverb of Johann Goethe:" He who does not know foreign languages does not know anything about his own." Personally, I think that to know foreign languages today is absolutely necessary for every educated person, for every good specialist. So let`s to learn foreign languages and discover with them many interesting things in our life!
