Tools and means of distance learning

Distance learning is a technology that is based on the principles of open training, extensive use of computer training programs for various purposes and modern telecommunications in order to deliver educational material and communication of a real-time type.

There are few types of distance learning. The first type is for self-study. Distance course can be located at a site. A student studies methodical materials, checks his/her knowledge, receives links to other sites on the Internet for a deeper acquaintance with the relevant discipline. The second type is for group study. an active exchange of information, thoughts of teachers and students is assumed. In this case, the control terms of training are set, and this course is usually included in the system of specialist training of a certain qualification (Bachelor and Master).

Tools creating distance language courses, as ESL, consist of many components, including the following:

1) user registration;

2) administration means;

3) presentation of the educational material;

4) means of testing and estimation of knowledge of users;

5) means of training;

6) storage of statistic data about the results of user testing.

When creating tools for learning and testing, the methods and approaches, used in computer science of training, are analyzed, the experience of the application of new information technologies, telecommunication facilities and the Internet for educational purposes is summarized.

Tools for learning and testing allow to:

- generate tests from the database according to criteria set by the developer course;

- use of different types of tests (choice of one option, the choice of several option, entering the response);

- include pictures, animations, audio and video files;

- use a context help in a training mode;

- suggest (in a control mode) at the end of the test statistic data about the results of testing that are recorded in the database of results;

To pass the test in a control mode, the user shall be registered in the course. Registered users have the additional possibility, namely:

- carry out control over the assimilation of knowledge (in an on-line mode) with the issuance of statistics on the test result;

- read the results of tests.

There are also a lot of the opportunities for teachers. The will be able to:

- access and edit databases with questions;

- defining criteria for selecting tasks;

- view registration form database;

- implement database management;

- view the database of test results of all registered users.

The purpose of such courses is to develop scientific and methodological principles of learning ESL using new information technology, telecommunications and the Internet.

Achieving this goal involved:

- specification of the conceptual foundations of the study of ESL;

- improving communicative-oriented methods of studying ESL;

- expanding the ways and means of training based on the achievements of modern linguistics;

- developing the scientific and methodological foundations of ESL in a foreign-language audiences based on a synthesis of national linguodidactic tradition, attracting international experience teaching foreign languages with the use of the advanced technology;

- developing training materials for the study of ESL and a system of testing tasks.

The last point shall include the following items:

-         defining a set of topics that are appropriate to submit a training course study of ESL;

-         application of the method of explanation  of difficult moments in a combination with the method of training and control;

-         diversification of the forms and methods of presentation of practical problems (tasks, tests, exercises, games);

-         providing the information in the form of comments, questions and answers, dictionaries, detailed guidance;

-          developing the sample tests to monitor the overall level of knowledge, skills;
