Today, the goal of the Ministry of Education and
Science of Ukraine is, first, to prepare young professionals able to represent
their country in the European academic and scientific spheres, second, to create conditions for learning English as
a language of international academic communication.
The implementation of this task requires the
introduction of new teaching methods, new forms of organization of
self-assistant students’ work, new approaches. One of them is the usage of
multimedia technologies that facilitate the efficient absorption of linguistic
material on different levels of education.
The task of the article is to reveal the ways of using multimedia technology while teaching a foreign
language.
The
analyses of studied materials [1,3,5,6] showed that multimedia learning technologies represent a
set of technical and didactic learning tools that enable the presentation of
educational information in text, graphics, audio, video, animation and other
formats. There are many ways to
use multimedia technologies which
are represented by such means as:
presentation, electronic books, electronic interactive whiteboards, email, and
other video-methods.
A special role during the thematic sessions devoted to
the professional events is the use of multimedia presentations created using
PowerPoint (using text information, graphics, animation, audio and video).
Multimedia presentations cover all types of speech activity of students
(writing, reading, speaking, listening and translation) and, thus, create a "virtual
reality" both in domestic and in the professional spheres.
Multimedia presentations can be used at various stages
of students’ work. At the stage of explanation of new material, for example, it
is required maximum visual aids and schematized educational material to help
students quickly understand grammatical phenomena.
Multimedia presentations are successfully used instead
of many tables, charts and images for productive, effective, and fruitful work.
At the stage of verification and consolidation of knowledge using multimedia
can carry out oral and written surveys, testing, give tasks for self and
others. Creating high-quality multimedia presentations to certain themes is an
interesting individual or group project task which encourages students to study
foreign languages.
Actually holding classes in a foreign language such as
audio-visual format facilitates more effective learning lexical units,
acquiring skills monologue and dialogue speech, the formation and working of
grammatical skills.
Along with educational computer programs in modern
teaching practice electronic textbooks are widely used. They have many advantage, such as: availability of
interactive communication with various educational resources (electronic
libraries, dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc.); information saturation; constant
updating of information material. There is a great number of teaching methods,
such as: the possibility of individualization of learning, an effective
learning; mobility; availability of receiving electronic manuals via the
Internet, etc. Electronic books provide
self-control of material, feedback and marked by ease of use.
E-mail gives students a chance to support the
knowledge of a foreign language with the help of native speakers, it encourages
to dialogue with them. In addition, e-mail is one of the auxiliary control
methods and adjustments to foreign students as they have an opportunity to
clarify information or to resolve issues that have arisen in extracurricular
time. It will help them to prepare for classes better.
Video-method gives a great possibility of presenting
information, as its main advantage is visibility of information that is more
accessible to perception, easily and quickly understood. Using video promotes
the development of various aspects of mental activity of students and, above
all, attention and memory. Using various channels the flow of information
(visual, auditory, motor perception) has a positive effect on the strength of
fixation of new vocabulary. Another advantage is the power of video impressions
and emotional impact that creates a personal relation to what students have
seen.
Thus, the use of multimedia technology in the study of
foreign language promotes the development of skills in reading, listening, oral
and written expression. Multimedia technologies help to understand the main
ideas of complex texts. They develop the ability to communicate in English
fluently and directly, as well as the ability to make clear, detailed message
to a wide range of issues and give an opportunity to present different views on
the basic problem. Multimedia technologies make work of students active,
improve and diversify the activities of teacher performance, increase student’s
learning.
