INFLUENCE
AND PECULIAIRITIES OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING FOR PUBLISHERS IN THE
EUROPEAN UNION
While
establishing business and public relations, the main condition is the knowledge
of the English language regarded as the international language. To bring
information to people and get necessary knowledge for you, we appeal to various
types of printed material. Publication of literature in English offers broad
access to the works of scientists from all over the world as well as makes a
positive contribution to the development of publishing in general.
The aim of the
paper is to research trends in teaching English as a foreign language for
publishers in the European Union.
The Paper
Objectives are following:
- to study a
place that English takes in the life of European citizens;
- to research
where the use of the English language is the most common and most important;
- to identify the
main features of teaching foreign languages in the EU.
The widespread
use of English in European countries where English is not their mother tongue
as well as usage of English while communicating in many transnational companies
has made English «straightforwardly the lingua franca of both the Continent at
large and of the European Union» («Just lingua franca on the continent as the
whole and in the European Union ) [1].
The world of IT
industry is speaking English. It is difficult to imagine technical professions
and social life in general without the English language. Today 75% of global
mail and 60% of radio programs are organized in this foreign language. Besides,
more than half of the world periodical is printed in English.
To master this
language at school, colleges or universities, it is necessary to use special
principles that will help to reach success. When we are speaking about teaching
English for special purpose (English for publishers in our case), there are
several techniques and principles to be used:
1. Intercultural
orientation: students take part in intercultural communication and acquire
linguacultural experience.
2. Education
process held by native speakers who are professional teachers or those who know
stylistic and other peculiarities of the English language.
3. Interactive
method: brainstorming, think-pair-share and others.
3.1.
Think-Pair-Share is regarded as a strategy designed to provide students with
“food for thought” on a particular topic and to enable them to formulate
individual ideas. It is a learning strategy developed by Lyman and associates
to encourage student classroom participation. This kind of activity encourages
high level of students respond. Its goal is to get students involved in the
process of thinking about concepts discussed in lessons. While talking over new
issues, students are forced to make sense of them comparing it with their prior
knowledge. Students are more willing to participate because they don’t feel the
peer pressure of responding in front of the whole class. Besides, it is easy to
be used in large classes.
3.2. Brainstorm.
This kind of activity encourages creativity and generates many ideas rather
quickly. It can be used for answering a question, raising interest in a
subject, solving a particular problem, and introducing a new subject. The
procedure of brainstorming is as follows: 1. Introduction of a problem or topic
both orally and in written form. 2. Invitations to respond with as many ideas
as possible. It would be better to be done in single words or short phrases. 3.
Encouragement of everyone to participate. 4. Explanations of rules: no one may
repeat or comment on any response till the end of the brainstorm. 5. Recording
of every response on the special paper. 6. After warding and analyzing of the
information.
4. One of the
most effective methods of studying English for special purposes (for
publishers) is using debates [2].
5. The method of
projects is widely used in the EU educational establishments to improve the
quality of teaching foreign languages
6. Computer
programs, such as «Linguist», «English discoveries», «English Gold», «Professor
Higgins."
English
Discoveries is an interactive, multimedia software platform for the development
of high-quality English language teaching. Its teaching objective has been
created by Edusoft è Berlitz International Co. This particular software for
studying English is taken as the pattern in the EU countries and the whole
world in general. Numerous state and local government agencies, educational
bodies, and main corporations in over 50 countries around the world master
English with the help of English Discoveries.
A characteristic
feature of this program is adaptability to a different taste of teaching,
because it integrates different studying technologies. There are 3 methods to
be taken for the work:
1.
"Democratic" (open) way: students select a topic they want to work on
and the method / approach they want to use.
2. High
structural way: programmed exercises, designed for intense study. Students
follow paths set by the program.
3. Tasks solving:
students form personal abilities to solve tasks and establish relationships
through exciting adventure game.
The course is
widely used for stuff teaching in the largest and well-known companies:
UbiSoft, MiTac, Bertelsmann, Electronic Arts, Samsung, Telecom, Havas,
Sumimoto, IBM, Bankinter and others.
There are various
sections of the program:
1. Reading.
Different types of texts are presented (stories, announcements, letters,
postcards and articles). The main strategy is reading one: guessing words from
the context, finding of the main idea, keywords, links, etc.
2. Speech. The
main attention is paid to the development of practical skills in the form of
dialogues (to ask permission or to ask about something, etc.).
3. Writing. By
using a given pattern, students write letters prepare reports, fill in forms
with the help of a simplified word processor.
4. Perception of
oral speech: listening to radio programs, watching TV / video, telephone calls.
5. Glossary:
themed word lists, partly taken from the four sections stated above.
6. Grammar:
explanations of the material written in the mother tongue.
7. Learning tool:
a) dictionary; b) reference; c) information on the student; d) review; d)
recording and playback.
Implementation of
these approaches in the process of foreign languages teaching in institutions
of higher education should improve the quality of foreign languages teaching as
well as to bring it closer to the standard of a native speaker. The research
conducted has showed that the usage of English for scientific materials
publication allows publishing business to develop in the EU, and publishers
become to be known throughout the world and they have a wide readership.
