Modern methods of teaching foreign language writing in high school.

Second-language writing is the study of writing performed by non-native speakers/writers of a language as a second or foreign language.

Writing is a visual form of communication, either printed in hard-copy or in electronic form. It follows conventions that are mutually understandable by the writer and the reader, even if these conventions change over time or are used with specific meanings. Writing is considered a productive skill because the writer creates new language and does not only interpret existing information.

Writing is a complex process that requires the author to be aware of and combine various components of language successfully.

The developing of the language skills has always been a very hard and an interesting task. The process of writing suggests that we can actually teach students how to write with coherence, an appropriate grammar structure and an acceptable spelling. One of the effective ways to do this is to motivate the students and make them aware of the steps involved in effective writing. There is little doubt that academic writing can be very challenging for learners of English as a Foreign Language as they must overcome the personal challenges associated with academic writing (generating ideas, organization, and mechanics) in order to develop the skills requisite for genre specific, coherent, and readable essays. With the introduction of the personal computer into the second language-writing classroom, and access to the Internet, both educators and learners alike have been provided with unlimited sources of information in the form of readable, authentic texts that address a wide variety of topics that are essential for second language development.

There is an increasing tendency of showing communication rather than the practice of linguistic forms. But we have to be careful because texts are made of sentences putting together for communicative purposes.

To begin writing it is important to know the function of it, for instance, Advising, Reporting, etc. But how can a teacher motivate the students for the writing activity?

The writing activities should be geared to their needs and interests. They should be linked to the real life whenever possible.

Teachers should be responsible of creating the best possible conditions for learning.

We should give some useful and practical teaching ideas for the developing of the writing skills such as:

1.     It is very important to teach pronunciation in English.

2.     Writing of sentences, paragraphs, compositions.

3.     Writing of authentic texts

4.     Linguistic games such as: Crosswords, Word Association, Guessing the word, etc.

5.     Reading a given text 2 or 3 times and then students have to remember as much as they can to write it.

6.     Free writing.

And many other kinds of task. A practical teaching idea may be the solution to avoid “boring lessons” in the English learning process. Theory and practice must be together to get good results in learning foreign language

For English writers, the process of writing in an academic environment is challenging. I used to tell my students that the only way to improve their writing is to keep writing-thinking that with enough practice in writing and revision. They would eventually acquire the bases, or at least the standard, required of academic discourse. Although the process approach to instruction, characterized by practice, collaboration, and the opportunity for revision, may be suitable for most English writers, it is apparent that many writers do not have the necessary linguistic ability to reap the benefits of the approach. Although we should not cripple our students' interest in writing through undue stress or grammatical correctness, the influence of second language factors on writing performance is something we have to reckon with and not pretend that concentrating on the process would automatically resolve the difficulty caused by these factors.
