Socio cultural competence of teaching a foreign language of Higher Education Institution.
The article "Socio cultural
Competence of Teaching a Foreign Language of Higher Education Institution"
is devoted to development of socio cultural competence of students. In this
work determination of socio cultural competence, its components and features of
its formation in the course of teaching a foreign language are shown. The term
"socio cultural competence" became one of the most frequency in
professional and methodical literature. Formation of communicative competence
is recognized as the standard purpose of modern training in foreign languages.
It is obvious that effectively to form this competence at the students; the
teacher has to have the necessary and sufficient level of its formation.
In article it is about need of ability to
communicate with other people, understanding of other culture, understanding by
students - the growing interdependence between the people and the nations,
tolerances in opinions and estimates, readiness for joint activity with people
of different views irrespective of their ethnic, racial and social origin and
religion, focus on universal nature of modern culture means of a foreign
language.
Need of modernization of the general and
higher education in Kazakhstan according to the international standards caused
need for the experts having culture and professionalism at the European level.
High school education has to be directed on training of specialists, realizing
the growing interdependence between the people and the nations, ready to
participation in dialogue of cultures. All process of training has to have a
socio cultural focus.
Socio cultural development of students by
means of foreign languages promotes formation at them of skill to communicate,
a speech step, impartiality in opinions and estimates, readiness for joint
activity with people of different views irrespective of their ethnic, racial
and social origin and religion. It creates prerequisites for studying of
cultures of carriers of the learned language.
A socio
cultural competence has the components linguistic-cultural and cross-cultural
and regional geographic competences. Background knowledge of the learned
language are important for formation of linguistic-cultural competence;
level of knowledge of a foreign language, realities; ability to use them as is
accepted in this culture.
Cultural and regional geographic
competence of the student includes knowledge of the country of the learned
language (knowledge of a socio cultural, historical and cultural, ethno cultural
background, geography, national customs, traditions, realities) providing
adequate communication with use of a national and cultural component of language.
Socio
cultural competence is formed on a set to an alternative basis, where one
channel on which information arrives, is supplemented with another. The main
socio cultural component of the content of training is the educational text. As
the educational text thematic, regional geographic, art texts, dialogues and
poly logues, verses, songs, letters, situational clichés, interview, audio
texts of conversations with native speakers are used. It is important that the
text was authentic, I corresponded to interests of students and I was closest
to a natural situation. Speaking about a socio cultural component in the
content of training, for example, if to take German then it is important to
allocate also a cultural component. This knowledge of social realities,
behavior model bases in a standard situation, important historical events, and
the largest figures of literature, art and medicine. For this purpose on
occupations the thematic texts acquainting students with realities of the
German life are used. Development of socio cultural competence is impossible
during the work only with one text - foreign culture or belonging to the
culture which is for the student native. Therefore it is necessary to address
when studying the same problem to two and more texts.
Stage-by-stage work with socio cultural
initial information is offered to students: the first stage - obtaining initial
information; the second stage reconstruction of initial information (comparison
- generalization - conclusion); the third stage - use of information. The part
of information is presented in the form of pictures, grants, medical or
technical popular scientific journals, methodical development with
illustrations which promote formation of a realistic image of the country of
the learned language; another - the pragmatical materials representing
utilitarian authentic materials (questionnaires, theatrical and other a aplets,
travel and entrance tickets, labels, cards, schemes plans, photos, slides with
types of landscapes, the cities, checks, cards, fair brochures on drugs, etc.).
On available application they are very significant for familiarizing of
students with others habitat and language.
Confidants to real conditions of
foreign-language communication of a situation are created on occupations by
means of pair or group work. For implementation of such communication students
constantly study technology of communication - how to begin conversation, to
support her, to enter it, in case of need - to add, specify, request
information, to agree or to disagree with the statement, etc. Role-playing
games, copying of actions and dialogue of texts are for this purpose used.
Inclusion in educational activity of
role-playing games, gives to students the chance to get acquainted with
mentality of the German and English people and develops positive motivation in
studying of their languages. During these games students study culture of
communication: how to welcome how to congratulate friends, native, familiar how
to ask a question for obtaining information.
The realization of socio cultural
approach is enabled when carrying out traditional German and national holidays
of British: Day of Saint Nikolay (Nikolaustag), Day Saint George, Christmas
(Weihnachten), St. Valentine's Day (Verliebstag), Easter (Ostern) - with
learning of songs and verses, demonstration and production of national
attributes by a holiday: wreaths by a crop holiday, Christmas, Easter,
Christmas candles and a calendar, Valentine's Day cards, an Easter tree, Easter
chocolate eggs, nests with Easter eggs and a hare, etc.
At learning of foreign language the
culture of the world in consciousness of the person is formed. The language
phenomena, customs, traditions, art, a way of life of the people are studied
and compared. Studying proverbs, for example, we compare as the same thought is
transferred by different means in different languages, we pay attention to such
moments that the popular wisdom expressed in proverbs is international.
The next moment, about which it is
impossible to forget, speaking about formation of sociocultural competence is
of course, speech etiquette. The speech etiquette is the standard of speech,
and the standard of speech is a face of the person, a face of the student. The
speech etiquette of a foreign language has special value for education of the
personality in general. In view of our language culture, it is possible to
learn and teach much, learning German or English colloquial etiquette, applying
in situations of cross-cultural communication (for example, a greeting, the
address, farewell in oral and written language).
One more way of development of socio cultural
competence of students is use of video records. Video movies are some kind of
cultural portraits of the country. Thanks to them, students can see personally
landscapes and sights of the country, to observe process of a holiday, a
ceremony, behavior model of people in everyday life, for example, on reception
at the doctor, etc. As the telecommunication and information technologies play
an escalating role in everyday and professional life of the modern expert,
there is a need of use of information technologies for development of
cross-cultural competence.
Immersion in virtual space - very
effective remedy of development of socio cultural competence of students. This
virtual space is the authentic virtual interactive language environment and the
powerful instrument of acquisition of knowledge - the Internet. It is boundless
bank of information. There is a set of thematic reference books and catalogs of
Internet resources in which it is possible to find concrete web addresses of
these or those sites devoted to these or those spheres of human life including
to training in foreign languages.
Thus, the modern young man has to be
focused on universal nature of modern culture, be able to communicate with
other people, to understand other cultures and to learn himself. Formation of
such personality is the most important task of the modern higher school.
