Occupational stress and the
syndrome of professional burnout among practicing orthodontist
It
is well known that the success of orthodontic treatment largely depends on the
ability of the doctor to conduct a dialogue with the patient, to create an
atmosphere of mutual trust and cooperation throughout the long-term treatment.
Every practicing orthodontist dentist is obliged to master the psychological
aspects of orthodontic treatment. An important stage of this cooperation is the
first acquaintance, during which the doctor faces a number of tasks:
-
arrange the patient to his verbal ways and other signs of attention;
-
to show the patient their respect, showing maximum friendliness and
sociability;
-
find out the motives that prompted him to see a doctor;
-
involve the patient in the discussion on all issues that interest him / her;
Each
orthodontist provides psychological training to the patient, namely:
-
explanation of the causes of dentoalveolar anomalies, their adverse health
effects, especially functional, aesthetic and social consequences;
-
clarification of the need for orthotherapy to achieve optimal psychological
state and health of the patient;
-
clarification of the essence of the proposed treatment and the role of the
patient in achieving a favorable end result;
-
training in hygiene skills during treatment;
-
explanation of the methods of rapid and less painful adaptation to the
treatment;
-
explanation of adverse consequences in case of violation of the doctor's
recommendations, as well as in case of self-termination of treatment.
The
importance of the establishment of the tandem: "the
Doctor-patient-parent" [1,2].
Also
important is the culture of orthodontic reception [6]. Recently in the cities
of Russia continues to make progress in the work of the Foundation "Star
rain", which provides dental, including orthodontic care for children with
autism, down syndrome and other genetic diseases. This means that the
requirements for dentists, and in particular for orthodontists, are rapidly
increasing [1,2, 6].
The
problem of occupational stress encountered in the course of employment, becomes
in our days of increasing relevance in the context of a more stressful pace of
life, increased competition among professionals increased requirements to the
quality of life and work. Initially, the concept of "stress "arose in
physiology to denote a non – specific reaction of the organism -" General
adaptive syndrome " in response to any adverse effect [3]. In foreign
publications on stress issues among dentists, it is noted that in the
activities of these specialists, a group of reasons can be identified that
allow dentists to be considered at risk. For example, in recent decades, the
suicide rate among dentists in the United States is 2.5 times higher than the
average statistical figure. Long-term professional stress in turn leads to the
emergence of emotional burnout syndrome. Burnout is characterized as a state of
emotional exhaustion resulting from prolonged stress-induced interpersonal
effects [4,5].
Professional
stress and burnout syndrome is a big problem for both the doctor and the
patient. Its negative manifestations affect the treatment process and the
emotional state of the doctor. The emotional sphere of the doctor is most
exposed to the influence of professional stress during the period of his / her
formation as a professional and accumulation of the necessary experience [3].
Therefore, emotional burnout can be considered as an expense imposed on us, for
alienated, distant from our human reality "life for the sake of the
demands of his time»
