Using innovative technologies in teaching English
Among the problems, both
theoretically and experimentally solved by methodology of foreign languages,
communicative competence and the ways of achieving it is one of the most actual
problems. Mastering communicative competence in English, not being in the
country of the target language is very difficult. Therefore, an important task
of the teacher is to create real and imaginary situations to communicate in
foreign language lesson, using different methods and techniques. In solving
this problem, innovative teaching techniques play a huge role that allow us to
give students more complete and accurate information on the topic, increase the
visibility of learning and cause
aspiration to further I,prove the linguistic.
Innovations in education – these are
the elements of the new, which significantly improve the educational process,
allowing to get rid of the shortcomings that hinder effective learning and
teaching. The main criterion of the value of innovation is its ability to
eliminate the defect. If the innovation serves to «decorate», «showing
off», «establish», nobody needs it, and its implementation only leads
to unnecessary costs of energy, time and money. What can be considered
innovative in foreign language education today? The innovations include:
·
Innovative
equipment;
·
Innovative
techniques;
·
Innovative
technologies.
Innovative equipment today is multimedia tools that
have become available to teachers and students using the computer, including
the Internet. Advantage of multimedia is a high quality picture and sound,
availability of appropriate cross-cultural information, the ability to create
e-mail groups, teleconferencing, international project – and all this is really possible, and cheap! The use of
the elements of innovative technologies such as Internet, social networking
sites, cell phones, e-books in teaching foreign languages suggests an active
position of the learner in the process of
learning. A new kind of cognitive activity excludes passive acceptance
of information.
We are living in a world in which changes are
happening so quickly. Let’s consider the world which we live. People are
creating 2000 websites every hour. They are uploading 35 hours of video every
minute and watching 2 billion YouTube videos every day. Teenagers have average
1000 Facebook friends. They connect with people 1000 miles away. They consume,
produce, communicate and share information in unimaginably ways. They truly are
the children of globalized world. In South Korea schools are switching to a
digital text books. So students can study anytime and anywhere with online
hours recognize school attendance. In Denmark students using Internet while
taking exam can access any site they like even Facebook as long as they don’t
message each other or using mail. Learning can happen anywhere and everywhere.
That is why some Australian schools pushing learning beyond school walls where
internships with local organizations are the fundamental part of each students
learning plan. Distance learning programs are connecting seriously disengaged
students with online learning communities and personal mentalities to help
discover their love for learning.
These examples point the ways to ensuring that tomorrow’s workers, parents and
citizens are more creative problem solvers, better communicators and lifelong
learners. To make sure that change happens on a massive scale we need to make
big changes. That is why teachers are creating online sites for learning
supported by interactive; constable updated digital resources structured around
students’ and teachers’ needs. Today 90% of Kazakhstan educational
organizations are using e-learning. At present moment in average 18 school
students can use one computer. 98% of schools and 97% of rural area schools
have the connection to the internet. So, almost all school teachers can use
Internet resources at the lessons.
Now Internet provides all kinds of media that a
student can access with a single click. Not only that, mobile technology has
even produced a new kind of learning called mobile learning, learners lean on
the go wherever they are and whenever they want. What is English on Mobile?
English on Mobile enables you to speak fluent English in various formal and
informal situations. Students can now learn English on their mobile phones
whenever and wherever you want and at your own pace!
In 21st society the dominance of
conventional, linear text of the last few centuries is eroding and quickly
giving way to multimodal communication, with a screen-based, non-linear, and
visual emphasis. With the advent of eBooks, students can not only read content
electronically but produce interactive written work of their own, complete with
images, audio and video, and interactive hyperlinks. Collaboration is more possible
than with simple word processing, and student work can be shared with anyone
via the Internet, allowing students to create content for classmates and
others.
Using social networking
sites in teaching English.
The more a person reads, the more effectively he will write. Writing blog,
paragraphs, essays and stories can be implemented. This will improve one’s
standard of writing as it is a process of creation and not a mechanical
production. In Facebook, writing on the wall is one special feature. This
enhances a person’s writing skill and helps a learner to establish a healthy
rapport with one’s peers. The instructor can also tag pictures and ask students
to comment on it. This will sharpen their observation skill and critical
thinking. There are many Facebook activities dedicated to help language
learning:
1) Groups and pages. Facebook has lots of groups and pages that can
connect your students to other English learners and offer them free practical
lessons to help with all aspects of English learning.
2) Practice posting the
status. Students can
practice simple English by posting things that are happening to them, which is
a great way to practice speaking in the first person.
3) Connecting to English
speaking friends. Facebook
is the perfect place to communicate with the native speakers and also to
continue practicing your student’s English! They can talk to people and get
instant responses back, so it is a time effective way of learning.
4) Change your student’s
default language to English.
Facebook has a spell checker, so if your students’ set their default language
to English, it will correct their
spelling mistakes! This can also help them to improve their vocabulary as your
students get to find out new words that may not have known before.
The organization of the activities with the use of
innovative technology may seem difficult but if we do it step it should be
easy. We should define an appropriate task, determine the final outcome, and
identify language skills and strategies, teach the students to use these all
elements of innovative technology to learn
language. This work demands a lot of hard work
from the teacher and the students; nevertheless, the final
outcome is worth the effort.
