Intercultural
aspect at the foreign language lessons
Problems of
creating a positive interethnic interaction
is very important in
contemporary reality. Besides , our society is inevitably affected by
the processes of globalization . Multicultural environmental , the participants
of which we are, sets the problem of formation at the individual bases of a
positive attitude toward members of other ethnic communities . Meanwhile ,
numerous studies have shown that there is a strong positive relationship
between ethnic identity and ethnic tolerance
.
One of the most
important features of Kazakh society is sharply conspicuous diversity of ethnic
cultures, which has a direct impact on the national consciousness of the people of Kazakhstan in their outlook,
values and ethic norms , as well as in the political culture in general.
Developing values of young people in
Kazakhstan is important not only from
the point of view of the public interest. It is closely associated with such concepts as the mentality the people,
value identification, interethnic harmony, political and spiritual culture,
etc. Educational establishments can
play a huge role in this .
Currently the
process of integration of Kazakhstan education system in the international
educational space is very active. In this connection there is the need to
develop models of educational structures that take into account both global and
ethnic and cultural peculiarities of the peoples living on the territory of the
Republic of Kazakhstan . The problem of
multicultural education has become
urgent , being centered on a
person possessing intercultural competence , formed on the basis of more than
three cultures : native ethnic culture, national and foreign .
The academic
subject "Foreign language" may be one of the tools of formation of
intercultural competence, which is a prerequisite for successful realization of
the student's potential in a multicultural world .
Educational task of
learning a foreign language is to developing mental strength and ability of students
to form a bilingual and multicultural personality.
Taking into account
the intercultural dimension of a foreign language in the classroom we may guess
that it is a powerful factor in the
overall education of the individual , allows you to organize the learning
process so that the formation of grammatical material goes on in parallel with the systematic assimilation
of cultural information and improves the efficiency of the development of
foreign speech .
Analyzing the
curriculum on a foreign language , it
is possible to find ways to attract intercultural component in the development
of most of the topics .
For example, when
studying the topic " About myself" or "My family", you can
use the exercise " The History of My Name". Contents : The teacher
offers group to discuss the following questions: What is the meaning of our
names ? Do we know their historical origins ?How parents choose names for their
children? Has ( had in the past) any of
the other members of the family got the
same name? Do you like or dislike your names? Why ?
Then, those who
wish can tell the history of their
names to the class. The exercise can be
completed by drawing attention to
cultural differences or similarities in the histories of their names , it is
also recommended to discuss the names used in the culture of the target
language .
Studying the lexical theme "My Family"
interesting in terms of awareness of students' own ethnic and civic
identity exercises can be done aimed at
understanding the history of the people and the country through their family
history . Students are encouraged to build on the same line the most
significant events since their birth
and those that occurred before they
were born . It results in the chronological line and some students sometimes start from the most
important historical events , followed by the
acquaintance of the parents
and finishing school , entering the
university, i.e very personal situations , and with it comes the realization
that the family history is connected with the history of the state.
At the moment , we
can say that the syllabus in a foreign language along with
linguistic and grammar aspects includes also the cultural aspect in
order to allow students to talk about the culture, geography , political
situation of the country of the target
language and of their native country.
As a result, students can describe in
the foreign language the facts and
events related to native culture, and
therefore in the process of real communication can speak about its identity and make it available to the
world culture.
For more effective
assimilation of information and to increase student motivation it makes sense to take advantage of the
numerous opportunities that the Internet
currently offers .
Thus, when studying
the topic My home-Kazakhstan «Video encyclopedia of Kazakhstan", a film
about our independent , the young state can be watched and analyzed .
Pre-watching tasks include the new
vocabulary on the topic and after-watch
there is a discussion . ( What did you
learn ? Do you agree with the facts as presented ? What would you add? How
would you represent your country to a foreigner who does not know about it ?) ,
As well as the video "Welcome to Kazakhstan" (part 1.2). "Asian
winter games" «Astana-a new wonder of the world", except watching and
discussion the students majoring in "RegionStudies» were invited to write
and reproduce their own comments on the videos and to tell about their country
in English
Language
teacher always finds interesting learning
material for the students that can be efficiently and effectively used in the
classroom for educational and instructional objectives of society.
Kazakhstan is a multicultural country . Formation and
development of such qualities as awareness , responsibility, respect for the
historical past , patriotism education , internal culture , self-esteem and
pride in their homeland , where the person is a citizen - a pledge of civil
personality formation .
