Multicultural education and its role at the professional development of
the learner’s personality in a technical university
Integration
of the Russian Federation into the European and global economy has made the
country one of the world centers of cultural exchange and interaction. The
dynamic development of the economy dictates high demands to a modern specialist
that should be a competitive, creative and an adaptive personality.
Considering
the actual trends in the field of higher professional education, we note that
the humanization and humanitarization are allocated from total number of global
processes and are general trends in the development of global education.
Humanization
of higher professional education is aimed at meeting the needs of both the personality and the society, and educational institutions
should form harmoniously developed specialists with universal culture, capable
of self-development of high moral and professional qualities.
Humanitarization is one of the main means of humanization of
higher education. It is aimed at the formation of personality through culture,
awareness of learners on their national identity. Humanization in the field of
higher professional education is in the comprehensive development of the
personality of the future specialist through the teaching of humanitarian
disciplines, the creation of a multicultural educational environment. [5]
The
"Concept of Multicultural Education in the Russian Federation" notes
that the main objectives of multicultural education are inseparable from the
general strategy of modernization of education in the Russian Federation, based
on the principle of balanced of social, ethnic, cultural and national interests
of the citizens. In a single multicultural educational space interests of each
individual are harmoniously combined with social and public interests. [2]
Multicultural
education is an important component of modern higher professional education and
promotes the assimilation of knowledge about other cultures, traditions,
lifestyles, cultural values of the peoples and ethnic groups by the learners,
education in the spirit of respect for other cultures and philosophical values
of life. It is necessary to distinguish
the following objectives of
multicultural education in a technical university:
·
formation of positive valuable conscious qualities of
the personality of a student in relation to the Russian culture;
·
the development of
respect for the history and culture
of other nations and ethnic groups;
·
creation of a multicultural educational
environment as the basis for interaction of the
personality with
elements of other cultures.
In the framework of the realization of the concept of multicultural education is necessary to select the term "multicultural
educational environment." We
believe that the multicultural educational
environment is a part of the
educational environment representing the set of conditions that affect the formation of a personality, its readiness for
effective inter-ethnic and
intercultural interaction, empathy,
preservation of national identity and
understanding of other cultures and
ethnic cultures, tolerance towards
the representatives of other cultures and ethnic groups.
In our
opinion, the main function of a multiethnic educational environment in a
technical university is to provide a tolerant attitude and effective
interaction between the subjects of the educational process, subject to create
an environment that allows the student to understand the cultural values, norms
and behavior patterns of their own and other peoples; create a positive
experience of interethnic and intercultural interaction.[1]
Thus, multicultural educational
environment, on the one hand, promotes
the formation of national identity of the personality, prepares
students for understanding other
cultures, recognition and acceptance of cultural diversity.
Related to all above,
it becomes very important to study the humanities. Humanitarian knowledge contributes
to the development of harmonious human relations with the
environment. This demonstrates the importance of humanitarian component in the educational
process in a technical university.
A special role belongs to the discipline of "Foreign Language" in connection
with the need to train qualified
specialists with not only knowledge in their specialty. They need to be able to
participate in discussions with foreign colleagues,
to negotiate and just to
communicate. The most important fact is that the knowledge of foreign languages helps to see the country in terms of crossing the cultures, to feel the diversity of the world, to tolerate manifestations of a vision
of the world and a different way
of life. [3-4]
So modern competitive specialist needs to know not only the foreign language but also the culture, traditions and
peculiarities of the peoples of
other countries. The study of national
cultural features is a
prerequisite for the formation of the ability to conduct a
dialogue of cultures as well as tolerance
towards people of other religions,
other traditions, customs, attitudes and beliefs, and this, in
its turn implies the formation of
a multicultural competence.
It
should be noted that it is the study of
national and cultural features at the lessons of discipline
of "Foreign Language" and
the development of a multicultural competence that influence on the formation of not only the internal readiness for the active conducting
professional activity, but also confidence in their own abilities in a multicultural society.
The
influence of national and cultural aspects of discipline "Foreign
Language" on the development of the personality of a student in a
technical university is in the formation of tolerant attitude towards the
representatives of other cultures, which is a prerequisite for improving the
competitiveness of the future specialist. [5]
Realization of the concept of
multicultural education can help to achieve more significant results in the preparation of
highly competitive specialists of international level.
So, we can conclude
that multicultural education plays an important role in the professional development of the personality of
a student in a technical university.
