Communicative approach to teaching a foreign language

In recent years scientists and methodologists offer new modern techniques of teaching a foreign language. The majority of techniques are based on communicative approach which is directed on formation of foreign-language communicative competence: abilities to understand and generate foreign-language statements in connection with communicative intentions and a concrete situation.

To avoid misunderstanding at natural communication with native speakers, it is necessary to know norms of speech behavior, including nonverbal behavior. Often nature of submission of information is caused by extralinguistic factors.

Use of communicative approach considers communicative purposes of language units, their ratio with activity and the social status of the person, thus communicative activity is a development subject in the course of training in a foreign language.

Creation of various communicative situations promotes communicative approach and creative orientation of training. Only creative tasks give the opportunity to use a foreign language as a communication medium. [2]

Most of scientists admit prospects of adoption exactly communicative method in process of teaching in foreign languages in modern public conditions. So, A. M. Vetokhov emphasizes ample effective teaching and educational opportunities of this method and its high potential to further development. [2] Communicative competence is considered to be created if "the future specialist uses a foreign language for independently to receive and expand the knowledge and experience". Communicative approach is urged to provide successful mastering all four types of speech activity on the basis of use such communicative situations and interaction for the purpose of the solution of practical tasks. [2]

The main problems in teaching students at higher technical educational institutions is the extraordinary brevity of a course and insufficient motivation to training, one of which reasons is very uneven readiness of the first-year students to perception of a  foreign language course. [1]

Achievements of culturological competence are the motivation for learning a foreign language. One of implementers of this task is use of phraseological units as a training material at different grade levels and in various aspects of teaching.

The phraseological fund of language contains in its semantic structure the national and cultural component reflecting cultural features and everyday life of the people – the native speaker, and also emphasizes identity of historical development of society. [1]

Methodically reasonable use of phraseological units promotes formation of all three communicative competences. Having the structure of typical syntactic entities, they allow you to track the grammatical features of the language. [2] Extremely multi-colored lexical structure of phraseological units, including pseudo-words, the words with no direct equivalents in other languages, the presence of parallel structures, make phraseological units a fertile training material for the formation of linguistic competence.

It is known that the phraseological fund of any language displays brightness, expressional and emotional potential. Studying a small amount of phraseological units will allow students to increase an arsenal of linguistic means, communicative strategy. [2]

It is expedient to note efficiency of use the units which aren’t phraseological in purely linguistic sense, but functionally close to them.

Postulates of the theory of phraseology, phraseological units as those, of course, can’t be a separate subject of studying at higher technical educational institutions, but skilfully used they improve work. Their novelty, educational, informative potential require creative approach and promote positive installation of audience.
