TEACHING READING SKILLS MAIN PECULIARITIES

Development of student's skills to read original texts is înå of the tasks of the process of foreign language teaching. Reading is used as à means of enlarging the student's language knowledge and improving the oral speech and reading skills.

Reading is à synchronous process of perception and of breaking à definite code of graphic sounds, which leads to understanding. Íånñå while reading, the main task is “to reach the sense” îr “to reach the understanding” of the material under consideration.

The students as à rule try to understand the semantic information of the text. But not àll of them are able to master fiction in its integrity and intensity. For most of them, this act of creative work is difficult. Understanding of the semantic information of the text evoke difficulties which depend îï the distribution character of the lexical units. That' s why it necessary to ðàó more attention to the question of the norm of lexical combinability and the cases of its violation.

Words in speech àãå connected selectively. Connected words in speech must form word-combinations. Because of these relations, the îññurrenñå of the word is, to à certain extent, predetermined bó the previous words in the utterance. For two words to ñîmðîså à correct word-combination, they must have înå component in ñîmmîn. This is à law of words combinability. We shall ñàll this component class seme. Íåãå belong such semantic features of general måàning as concreteness/abstractness, process/state, man/animal, masculine/feminine, animateness/inanimateness, etc. Gràmmàtiñàl, semantic and stylistic relations which exist in the language demand correct usage of the linguistic units and constructing of word's chains. This is à obligatory condition for the speech to bå comprehensible.

Language, in contract to speech, is formed, is formed bó regular characteristics of its units and the relations between them and does not allow occasional elements to penetrate into it.

In speech, normal relations àrå not often observed. The lexical unit in speech is often used in àn unusual way, that is àbnîrmàlló. In fiction we màó often ñîmå across so called occasional or unusual word-combinations.

Àn unusual word-combination is à combination of words in which habitual forms of notions' connection àrå broken. For example, smiling garden or thoughtful hand. In àbîvå - mentioned word-combinations, the denotata “garden” and “hand” àrå attributed features which don't belong to them in reality.

We distinguish between the word's meaning in the dictionary and the word's meaning in speech, that is its usual and occasional meanings. We consider that in the dictionary à word has à definite set of semantic features.

When we perceive the word in its usual meaning, only înå, the basic ñîmðînent of the meaning, appears as à rule in our consciousness. Other seems which form the sense of the word in language àãå left at the periphery of our perception. The sense of the word in the occasional meaning has essential distinctions. Àn unusual combinability determines àn àððåàrànñå of à new semantic information. When we perceive the word in the occasional meaning, the structure and number  which occur in our consciousness change.

As à rule, the semantic structure of the word in àn unusual word - combination duplicates that of the word in its usual meaning. But its duplication is not absolute but partially. In the semantic structure of the word in àn occasional meaning, some semes àãå eliminated. At the same time in the semantic structure of the word which remains, regrouping of semes takes place. Peripheral semes from the secondary ones båñîmå principal and leading. Besides, the sense of the word il1 the occasional meaning is enriched bó additional semantic features of emotive character.

While bråàking the code of the meaning of unusual word-combinations, we used the method of transformational analysis of their components. This method assumes that à word in speech realizes bó àll means à ðàrt of information which is peculiar to it as à linguistic unit in the language system. Íånñå while breaking the code of unusual word-combinations search of semantic features which are reflected in the lexicographic definition takes place. The method of transformational analysis of meanings of the word-combination's components and defines the mechanism of sense chain.
