Some methods of forming
the skills of the intercultural competence
Each lesson of the foreign
language is a practice of the intercultural communication. The
content of the process of teaching foreign languages can be filled with the
inclusion of cultural approach. The main task
of this approach in the field of language education is teaching the person through achieving
of the foreign culture. The
means of achieving of this purpose are authentic materials which help the
students to acquire intercultural experience , to expand their
knowledge, to take a picture of the
world as a whole.
The English language has become
the international one in the 20-th
century and is studied in many
countries of the world. So it is in Russia. It is used for communication
of people of different nations, that’s why it penetrates into the culture of other
countries.
The authentic video materials are
one of the most effective means of the development of intercultural competence;
allow to concentrate the attention of the students not only on verbal means:
gestures, looks, behavior of the partner.
The visual contact facilitates the
perception of the authentic speech. The efficiency of the use of video
materials depends on the organization of the structure of the lesson, of the
coordination of educational opportunities of the films with educational tasks.
We usually determine four stages in the structure of the video lesson:
1)
the preparatory one -
clearing of linguistic difficulties;
2)
the seeing of the film – forming and
developing of the skills of the
information perception;
3)
the control of the understanding of
the film;
4)
the development of skills and
abilities of the oral speech.
Another means
of forming the skills of the intercultural communication is teaching of the
English language by means of English musical works and poetry. The use of songs has a number of
advantages. They reflect different
sides of social life of people whose language is studied. Songs influence the
intellect, emotions of the students, their memory; they contribute to the
aesthetic upbringing of the students. The use of songs motivates the learning
of the English language, promotes the better mastering of the language
material.
A song is a model of the sounding foreign
speech and it promotes to mastering
of the pronunciation and audition skills. So learning and
performing of short, not difficult songs help to consolidate the articulation
and pronunciation of sounds, the stress, the rhythm, the intonation of the
English sentence.
A song as one
of the kind of the communication is a
means of mastering and broadening of the vocabulary. The familiar vocabulary is
met in songs in the new context, it helps to activate the vocabulary. While learning words, the
grammatical constructions are better learned. There are some special
songs for learning the most widespread grammatical constructions.
The song
materials can be used in different stages of the lesson:
- at the beginning of the lesson
during the phonetic exercises;
- in the middle or at the end of
the lesson for creation the favorable
situation, for reduction the tiredness,
for remembering the lexical and
grammatical materials, for
stimulating the cogitative
activity.
The
methods of working at the song materials are the following:
1) the preparation for working at the song ( the brief
information about the song, the work at the vocabulary);
2) listening of the song (emphasizing of the main lexical and grammatical constructions, the translation
of the song);
3) the phonetic work at the text of the song,
4) the work at the lexical and grammatical materil of the song;
5) learning of the music and the text of this song;
6) the performance of the song;
7) doing exercises of the creative character.
Studying of a foreign language with the help of musical works and poetry is
a simple way which combines the possibility of repetition many times. This is a
kind of studying without stress, with pleasure and wish. A song or a poem is a
logically finished, short and compact
text where students can find topics common to all mankind such as love,
loneliness, relationship conflicts, nature etc. At the same time perception of
songs and poems has an individual character.
It can lead to interesting discussion.
There are a number of international
computer programs which can help in
studying foreign languages, for example, “Talk to me”, “Bridge to England”,
“TOEFL” and others.
Thus, the use of the foreign culture in the educational
process increases the educational
potential of the subject, the
motivation in learning languages. It
contributes the common cultural education of the students, forms their
self –confidence, the development of their
aesthetic taste.
